Socio song: Via Chicago

  1. I had a damn good chuckle when I heard the first two verses, heh.

How often do you dream about multiple people you know in the same dream? The last year or so, I keep having them where they're all out of order, or swapped places. Musical Chair People dreams. It's as boring and confusing as it sounds, especially since they're usually lucid and confuse the holy hell out of me afterward.

  4. Are the musicians' souls poured into performing this tune? It doesn't seem to be the kind of music that emphasizes much on technicalities, at least not as compared to classical music.

Some of the debaters the other day argued that the aspect of "putting your soul into the music" while you perform is the one aspect that makes all the difference.

When I was in Japan I learned to play the Koto, and I was constantly told to put all my attention on getting it technically right - no, on getting it perfect! It was not about "pouring your soul into it".

So there ARE both components. And you can derive equally much pleasure from both. As always, it's a matter of what perspective you choose to take when you listen to that tune that day.

I don't know to say about today's music video, it doesn't do much for me. I guess the instrumental side is interesting, but it doesn't "ignite".

  6. Eh, art doesn't need to be technically perfect or particularly soulful to convey the meaning the artist set out to demonstrate.

The attitude the singer takes is rather bored. The music itself, the tone of the piece, feels indifferent; Like the instrument wouldn't be accompanying the singer if it had anything better to do. The performer couldn't care less about the fate of the victim which is demonstrated by putting little effort into the performance. The emotive message of the piece correlating to the technical performance of the piece = creating the empathic experience of indifference. Not a very technical or soulful piece, but perhaps an effective one.

  12. I never actually listen to the songs M.E. posts anymore. Not a fan of M.E.'s taste... but I'm not a fan of most people's tastes.

Yesterday I dreamt about Jon Stewart. It was fun. I like that guy. Colbert even made an appearance, but I didn't care about that.

    ReplyDelete
  13. That is not boredom. What you are referring to is boring.

  14. Your picture is back. Medusa has a rich mytho-history. Stewart and Colbert make for interesting dream projections.

What is your taste in music? Curious, you have a trained ear.

  15. Yeah, I had to because someone is having a good time with my name.

    Oh, I like most everything.

Most interested in metal and prog these days. Closest to classical music of any modern genre.

  16. ...and I don't mean it so much in sound as I mean it in structure.

  18. Adam, Boredom is an emotional state experienced during periods lacking activity or when individuals are uninterested in their surroundings.

I apologize for being tiresome or dull. You are funny in a pathetic and endearing way. Kinda like a little brother.

  19. Sleep, Yob, Om, High on Fire, Agalloch, Hawkwind, Pink Floyd, Camel, early King Crimson, Black Sabbath, Rabbits, Black Cobra, old Metallica, of course...

I like the dirgy/psychedelic/doom metal stuff, not so much the cock rock stuff that most people think of when they think of metal, generally not a huge fan of black/death metal (except Dethklok, but that's only because of Adult Swim's Metalocalypse cartoon.)

Interesting stuff going on in the underground metal and post-metal world right now. A lot of it has Mid-Eastern influence and spirituality (Om is a good, minimalist example of this.) Lots of 20 minutes long songs and shit like that.

  23. Question for Socios:

Do you spend hours planning how you will hurt someone? Do you do impromptu usurps?

Do you do some of both?

  24. i'm not a socio but i consider planned revenge a key trait of being a sociopath, especially when the other party has done little to deserve such venom.

  25. A soulless tune, this music video. Didnn't bother with the text either.

No offense to blog author, just how I feel bout this one.

    Adam!
Yo! What's ya name at 4 degreez again? I forgot.

Almost wanted to ask you what ya think o Nbliz dere. Haha.

"i'm not a socio but i consider planned revenge a key trait of being a sociopath, especially when the other party has done little to deserve such venom."

That you're not a sociopath you needn't tell us, it's obvious from your misconceptions.

You actually believe a sociopath would take revenge against someone thre is no revenge possible to take against, and prefer leaving those who wronged him be?

There's a strange sub-branch of Chrsitianity - in Africa and India, I think - who takes that approach. It's a technique meant to divert man's inherent talent for anger, justice and urge towards taking action so as to change and make things better. The moral is that you shouldn't think about making stuff better, just think bout goin to heaven, meet Jesus and all that.

Outside of religion only schizophrenics might do something like you say. Sociopaths are usually normal people with emotions like others - but who tend to keep their emotions within their private or minority - so they seem cold and without feelings to others.

Psychopaths are affectionally deficit. Being one myself I can attest to the fact - I've seen scan results, they speak for themselves.

But your post is nonsense. Maybe ya should seek help, pal!

  26. Medusa,

I love Black Sabbath. My taste in music is so versatile that there're very few genres, if any, that I really don't like ANY of what I've heard of.

But then you mention Minimalistic music.

Whoa, you got me on that one. That is one of the few genres I can't stand! I don't see what's the great idea of cutting an audial piece down to be least possibly audial. If that's how they feel, why don't they quit making music altogether? That should be their ultimate goal reached with perfection, no?
Of course I understand that's not the case. It just always annnoys me when most of the music isn't there.

Yoko Ono has made some interesting music, but her taste for minimalism (at least in the period many years back when I listened to her occasionally) eventually turned me off.

What's with the hitting each note the shortest possible fraction of a moment? When I like a note, I like to HEAR it, not to have it presented and then taken away. Minimalism is tease music, like a whore who never delivers. A masochistic genre indeed.

I really detest it - and that's even as I understand the intellectual interest in it, because the idea IS interesting AS an idea.

One other genre that I will mention is Modern Jazz.
To me it sounds like a band of musicians who are each doing their own thing, playing each a different number, and frequently stopping to tune their instruments.
It's like deliberate noise that has only the purpose of finding out just how must distortion and disharmony you can create within a period of time with a certain number of different instruments.
And apparently the experiment is more interesting the greater the performing artists are at playing their instruments, meaning the greater music they COULD have made.

I know, I must sound horribly devoid of ear for music per se. But that's actually the opposite of the truth. I don't have any schooling, not even popular schooling, but I know I have talent (have been told as much by musicians - even Herbie Hancock, who IS a modern jazz musician, told me I ought to study and do something real about it).

    Jason:

"Do you spend hours planning how you will hurt someone? Do you do impromptu usurps?

Do you do some of both?"

I realize this is meant for Sociopaths, but I take it you use that term interchangeably with Psychopath, and so I'll answer:

I've done some of both, yes.
The impromptu usurps were more frequent than the thorough long term planning, but I guess that's in the nature of things that are longterm versus those that are not.

You may wonder how we are emotionally with this kind of intellectual activity, yes? Well that depends too. But generally speaking I was very confident, because I knew from experience I was good at reaching my goals, and that made it a pleasure... though of course not compared with the actual watching or conducting the plans as they took effect.

For years some such project was always in the making or unfolding at any point of my life. So I guess you can really say that yes, it's a big part of some people's lives.

Funny side note: There wasn't that much difference in how I took revenge on someone and how I went about things with someone I had no beef with, but whom I simply had gotten my eyes on, whom I 'wanted', you could call it.

So I'll do something else: Luckily I have a website, so I'll simply post it there. You guys can click my name (I leave the direct link), read it, and then go back and reply here... or there (though it's addressed to this thread).

    I'll check if anyone responds.

    Medusa,

It's mostly about music in relation to something you wrote!

    Jason,
There's also an honest answer to your question!

(ah yes, experiments. What would we spend out time doing if we couldn't experiment).

    ReplyDelete
  31. If that comment falls prey also I'll just let it go.

There'll be other times to debate musical tastes and our reasons - as well as be honest about how we conduct ourselves in regard to behaviors we'd rather no one know about, really.

But there's always my website/blog. Those who have understanding, can count the number of Zhawq and click the link. ;)

    See you later, guys.

  33. 'Do you spend hours planning how you will hurt someone? Do you do impromptu usurps?'

That depends. Being called an asshole or a monster doesn't phase me but if they question my abilities or put someone above me it makes me furious. Also being too intimate with a person can make me rage, when I think about it later. I don't mean hug and kiss intimate even something as small as sharing a mildly personal story is enough for me to perceive I've been too intimate. I'd rather be in a group or on my own that just one on one with a person, I don't know how to show affection as i don't have very much to give, the only acts i know is to be sarcastic and sly or dominate the individual.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Adam, why does being intimate create a furious response? Ammunition for revenge? Or just the discomfort of being seen? Just curious.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Zwang, I think you are confused about what Minimalist music is. Or you have just been exposed to the shit kind of avant-garde John Cage-y crap, which is supposed to be more intellectual and conceptual, and not so much aurally pleasing. Usually that crap is just called avant-garde, not Minimalism.

Minimalism doesn't actually mean minimal sound. It usually just means simplicity and repetitiveness.

One of the most well-known contemporary classical miminalist pieces of the good sort is Music for 18 Musicians by Steve Reich, one of my most favorite pieces of music ever. It's intense. Philip Glass is probably the most well-known minimalist composer. Other composers include Arvo Part, who wrote some of the most beautiful music of the last 100 years. John Adams is also one of my favorite composers, and there's nothing boring about his stuff. Also, anything by Om (which is an offshoot band of the stoner doom metal band Sleep) is minimalist.

If you've ever seen the movie The Piano, all the music in that is minimalist. Gorecki, also a minimalist, wrote the most famous piece of classical music of the latter half of the 20th century. If his Symphony No. 3 doesn't bring tears to your eyes, nothing will.

The good minimalist stuff is almost trance inducing, sometimes to the point of euphoria, and it often often very spiritual and dark.

    ReplyDelete
  36. For an example you might know well, There's Radiohead'sHow to Disappear Completely (And Never Be Found) off of OK Computer, which is directly influenced by a lot of the stuff I just listed.

Also Glen Branca, who did symphony-of-a-gazillion-electric-guitars stuff, often with members of Sonic Youth.

I could go on and on in true Asperger's fashion on this topic.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Medusa, listened to clips of all your recommendations. Very structural, I can hear that even without a trained ear. I am very intrigued by Agalloch. Om also. Loading some music clips onto a CD to listen on my way to yoga. Trippy stuff.

    You said . . .
"The good minimalist stuff is almost trance inducing, sometimes to the point of euphoria, and it often often very spiritual and dark."

    Yes.

  38. "Adam, why does being intimate create a furious response? Ammunition for revenge? Or just the discomfort of being seen? Just curious."

I'm not sure on that. I get a really weird feeling, it's not a good feeling. Even when a person uses warm words towards me, it brings out this response, I get this strange sense of shame then i get a little angry, In short, I like attention not affection.

  44. Another question for socios:

Do you ever fear anything? Are you calm when other people try to illicit emotional responses out of you? What do you do when someone tries to get a reaction out of you?

    ReplyDelete
  45. But your post is nonsense. Maybe ya should seek help, pal!

shut up. you sound stupid. seek help for what? misconceptions of what? if someone steps on your shoes, should you kill them? where does the balance of revenge scale? is it two eyes for one tooth? i mean, that is what we are talking about here, sociopaths! last i heard, saw, and knew, sociopaths aren't exaclty oprah!, hell oprah isn't even oprah. you're called sociopaths for a reason. normal emotions my ass.

unless you are trying to annoy Zhawq your constantly calling him Zwang is definitely a psycho thing.

    Zhawq:
You sure are a man of few words. NOT! What's wrong with you? Ypu keep quiet for the longest time and then you get into a period where you won't shut up? Are you bipolar? Are you on the up and up currently?

    Adam:
It is hilarious that you perceive yourself as a pervert uncle. Yo are not a day old than what you are called, an obnoxious kid. It is amazing that you have no way of seeing yourself anywhere close to how you appear. Grow up, buddy, grow up and get in line with your biological age. Best way to grow up is to get yourself a place of your own, parasitic life style is what you have. Your aunt must be pitying you big time, and hoping one day, just one day, you'll open your eyes and decide to grow up and get the hell out of there and go get yourself a job and a place of your own.

Bad day, eh? Someone give you a wedgie or something and you didn't fight back so now you are doing it here?

"There's that thing in The Godfather: Part II of 'I love you, Fredo, you're my brother, but don't ever take sides with anyone against the family', then Michael Corleone has to have Fredo 'taken out' on the boat ... There are times, like these, when I want to take Charlie out for a boat ride ... Charlie should know that he might have a boat ride in the future. Someone's got to be Michael Corleone."
