I've been thinking about certain Japanese anime and manga I am audience to recently, and I realize that openly sociopathic characters, or at least characters that fit those criteria without being labeled as such, seem to be more common in roles that do not involve out-and-out villainy. I'm not certain whether there might be a difference in cultural perceptions involved, but I suspect that diverse sociopathic characters are more common in Japanese media simply because, freed from regular social conventions, you can do more things with them than other types of characters.
There is one sociopathic villain who sticks out in my mind because, unlike most in Western media, he *doesn't* fit the mold of an unrepentant murder-rapist - Izaya Orihara, of the light novel, manga, and anime series called 'Durarara'.
Izaya is a twenty-six-year-old information broker living in the Tokyo district of Ikebukuro. The chief joy he gets out of life is simply playing with other people's intentions and expectations, and he uses his occupation as an excuse to screw with people on a professional basis. In addition to this, he has a particular modus operandi that seems to suit all of his purposes simultaneously:
Step 1: Find a high-school-age girl, preferably an insecure or withdrawn one.
Step 2: Ply the girl with attention until she is completely infatuated with him.
Step 3: Plant the girl as a spy/information gatherer wherever he feels she is necessary.
Step 4: Once he has gotten enough use out of her, find ways to undermine her confidence and self-worth, which are at this point totally dependent on his approval.
Step 5: Repeat ad nauseam.
In the very first two episodes of the anime, Izaya contracts a group of kidnappers working for an unlawful pharmaceutical company to abduct one of the girls who works under him in this way. Once she is rescued by the heroine, the trauma has affected her so badly that she goes to the top of an abandoned building with the intent to jump off the roof, but relents at the last minute. Izaya takes the opportunity to pop up, revealing that he's been following her the entire time, and congratulates her - on doing exactly what he thought she would do in the aftermath of such an event. He goes on to tell her, in a syrupy tone, that he's rather disappointed in her now... because she's not *quite* as special as he initially thought. Her anguish at this latest insult and manipulation is palpable, and once he leaves she really does jump, but is again saved (physically and emotionally) by the heroine, which is fortunate for her because it releases her from Izaya's control.
Izaya mentions in passing that he loves humans - 'humans' being the operative word, because it indicates that he thinks of himself as being on a separate level from them. This does indeed seem to be true, but not in the way that normal love is expressed. As far as he is concerned, his use and abuse of others is a fitting expression of affection, and despite his skill at manipulation he seems to be unable to grasp the sincerity of other people's feelings. Late in the series, when he ends up in the hospital, a girl who has been covering for him (in a complicated way) by pretending that both her legs are still broken has a breakdown and bursts into his hospital room with the intent to kill him. Her own stress is so great that she breaks down crying - and Izaya, startlingly, responds to this by embracing her and telling her how much he still loves her.
Why is this significant? Because Izaya is easily the most popular character in the series. Fans do not downplay his sociopathic tendencies at all - in fact, they actively revel in them, and look upon him as hugely entertaining. I find myself hard-pressed to argue with them, considering that he is a man who thinks nothing of using his connections to hound a particular target he's been hired to search for, then turning up moments after the man trips and falls flat on his face and jumping up and down on him like a trampoline. If what Izaya does isn't hilarious in a mean way, it's still damnably fascinating to watch.

ReplyDeleteviva misogyny and adolescent power fantasies \(^ ^)/
ReplyDelete::headdesk:: I hate manga/anime. All of it. At least, all of it I've seen. It's all horrible, rotten nonsense. No good, just bad. Most of it is a step and half away from Hentai already. Japanese have the most bizarre fetishes ever. Ugh.
ReplyDeleteHaven, you must love abuse because every time you comment someone smears you
ReplyDeleteSlut
I loved watching pokemon when i was very young, i was big into the card game too, this new poor looking kid moved into our neibourhood years ago, his mom and her boyfriend were alcoholics and he was very quiet, me and my friend spotted him, we were nice to him at the beginning but we were using him, I'd sit outside his door and we would put his pokemon cards in a big pile, he had good cards but i had the best in the whole area. He was very stupid, me and my friend would pick up the cards and pretend we were scratching our back while we put the cards down our pants, I gave myself away because I kept laughing, he caught me taking one and I just looked at him as if to say so? And like a coward he says "Oh, at least leave me with a few" LOL.
ReplyDeleteI'd do run aways too as well as stealing from the store, I knew this other kid who had a aspergers, he used to go to these tournaments all over the world and had amazing cards, he wasn't stupid like the other guy, he kept his cards in his hands or inside his door, and his mom didn't like the look of me so she was always watching what i did, he must have told her i was stealing cards because he said to me once "you have awesome cards, you either steal them or your rich, and your not rich".
So you wouldn't say that there is more incentive for the human race to be "sociopathic" than not?
ReplyDelete1. They're called sheep for a reason, this is not a joke as much as it is an insult to their intelligence as it is the truth.
2. Shall we talk about the divorce rate? There's absolutely no incentive to get divorced as opposed to a child having two parents right?. By comparison regular folk are "good" and the so-called sociopath is "bad" and unacceptable still, even in a society as shitty as the U.S.
Maybe Japan has it right? Who knows?
I wonder how people are treating each other under dictatorships/Imperial(honor) systems.
Part II:
ReplyDeleteMe and my bestfriend wanted this kids cards bad, so we decided that we were going to get them. He lived 15 minutes away and he didn't know my address, so he was perfect. I rang his bell and his mom answered she called aspie and he came down to us, he wore his pygamas all day, so i knew he wouldn't chase me out the door and find where i lived. He told us to wait a second while he got his box of cards, i was being extra friendly to him that day so that he would let me hold his good ones, he hesitated at first then he let me hold them, i tapped my foot off the back of my other heel and that was the signal, my friend ran in to his porch and grabbed the box and i shouted "snatch and run y'all". We ran like fuck i looked back 2 minutes later and i was shocked, the bastard was catching up on us, he was in his bare feet and pygamas and he was behind us, I told my friend to turn back and hit him but he wouldn't a few minutes later he stopped and we got away, i looked back and he was on the ground exhausted, those cards were his life.
When i got home we split the cards, I still had much better ones. When i had four or five friends over we battled in my house, I made a rule the loser has to give their best card, I made up the rule because i was basically impossible to beat, I made the rules as i went along and i had the best cards, I didn't lose once, they learned to hide their cards from me.
Plus ME is a girl...
ReplyDeleteAnon at 6:45am:
ReplyDeleteI wonder how effectively sociopaths operate in collectivist societies where reciprocity of interdependence is key to the continuation of peace, stability, security, and so on.
How much harder is it for them to move like wolves among sheeple in societies that don't expect individuals to *only* look after themselves and their immediate family?
Is an individualist society inherently sociopathic?
Every aspie should pick up cards games, this guy was a beast, he knew the everything about the game, every in and out.
ReplyDeleteall your stories suck adam. what you described just now is the kind of thing any youngster would do.
ReplyDeleteNever said it wasn't, but there was a reason I had the best ones and they didn't. I did much worse things but that was hilarious as it happened so I thought I'd share it.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't reckless as a youth though, most of the kids i grew up with smoked drank and had sex with everything, i never did any of that, nor did i want to.
ReplyDeleteI still know the guy from the first paragraph, he is terrified of me, he can't even look me in the eye, and hunches his back and has hesitated movement when I'm around. My family felt sorry for him and brought him on vacation with us to hawaii a few summers ago, we had our own house and he stayed with me. One night i came in drunk and got sick in the bath tub, i treathned him not to tell anyone that I got sick, I like people to think that I'm above alcohol. I was in the room about to wake up when i saw someone come into my apartment, it was my mom checking to see if we had enough money for the day, he said no because I told him to never take money off my parents, and if he did I'd take it.
ReplyDeleteI pretended to be asleep so I could listen in on the conversation, I heard him tell my mom that there was vomit in the bathtub, i clenched my fist headbutted the pillow and bit the covers so i didn't get up beat up the two of them.
I got up and told my mom to get the fuck out of my apartment and that she'd better knock next time she walks into my home. When she was gone i punched the guy right in the jaw, i would have hit him in the nose but i didn't want any marks or blood, they knew i moderatly bullied him but not to the extreme, I told him he wasn't going out LMAO i made him go to bed and he missed out on the whole day.
I think the guy wants to kill me now, you can only put a person down for so long, no matter how weak they are, look at Libya. I probably gave him BPD along with is alcoholic parents lol he smokes now and his whole attitude has changed, he wears leather jackets and dark clothes, i see right through it he can fool everyone except me.
ReplyDeleteAdam you sound like an aspie.
ReplyDeleteorly?
ReplyDeleteWhy? Because i liked pokemon? Lol you are an idiot, have you watched the show? If you did then you'd know it's pretty fucking brutal. Don't hate because your poverty ridden parents couldn't buy you a TV.
ReplyDeleteI like to suck men's ass for crack. Or at least that's what I did while the people around me developed normal lives.
ReplyDeleteholy shit adam nobody cares
ReplyDeleteGood one. I'm not an aspie i never had problems socialising, I was very popular as a kid and I've always found it easy to make friends, the problem comes in keeping them because I'm dominant and not very agreeable, two traits which I'm proud proud of. I'm a habitual liar too which I don't know if many aspies are, and I'm awful at most subjects that aspies excel in, I know i could probably do exceptional at those if i tried, but obviously the boredom comes in, and aspies spend hours talking about boring drivel, i like to get to the goodies, as most here do.
ReplyDeleteAre you implying that an aspie would not like brutal things?
ReplyDeleteI do think aspies are similar to narcs/psychopaths in a sense. Like psychopaths/N's they aren't empathic which gives them the ability to look at other people and ridicule them for the stupid things they do, It's not about confronting these people though, oh no that was five years ago, been there and done that, now it's about smug satisfaction.
ReplyDeleteWow Adam. Once you start going you just don't stop. Isn't this why you have a blog? So you can pour out your little black heart. Strangely enough though I had a similar experience as a child. But I stole from stores rather then those around me.
ReplyDeleteThis is my blog...
ReplyDelete@Kesu.. I did steal from stores but it was risky. There was only one place that kept their cards and the other things i wanted somewhere that wasn't behind the counter, I got caught stealing after a while and I was brought into the back, the guard took my shoe and made me go home with one shoe on, he wanted to teach me empathy.. it didn't work.
ReplyDeleteThat security guard is partly the reason why I hated authority, he was a prick.
ReplyDeleteNope never got caught. I stole probably somewhere in the vicinty of 30k-50k worth of merchandise from various retail outlets.
ReplyDeleteMeh, i was never a hardcore criminal. I do things every day that i could be arrested for small things like harassment or pretending to tie my shoe lace then leaving my rubbish on the ground. I was chased once for doing that when i was a kid by this insane tree hugger in a van but that's another story.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I've noticed a few more sociopaths/people with sociopathic traits in anime than in western TV. Death Note is a well known example where the main chracter is a sociopath. Admittedly, he is also the 'bad guy', but it's pretty easy to end up rooting for him. Plus, it's been a while since I watched the show, but I'm not entirely sure L, one of the main 'good guys' isn't also sociopathic.
ReplyDeleteNo L is an aspie. @Adam you can get arrested for littering? Because I do that all the time and I don't even try to hide it. I MUST BE SO HARDCORE!!! Seriously though. If it isn't huge whats the point in talking about it?
ReplyDeleteI don't mean arrested, fined or some shit. I don't know I'm not stupid enough to do it in front of the police.
ReplyDeleteYeah, now that I think about it, aspie makes a lot of sense for L.
ReplyDeleteHave you watched Code Geass? The main character of that kind of intrigued me, because he clearly cared about (some) people, and obviously he cared about his sister more than himself, but he constantly calculatedly used and manipulated everyone around him to his own ends. He seemed kind of like a non-sociopath using sociopathic methods.
Adam - are you a troll or are you just stupid? I can't tell.
Don't confuse intelligence and sociopaths.
ReplyDeletethe japanese mindset is to be very reserved and hide their emotions as much as possible. if any culture could breed flat effect people incl psychopaths then it is that one. the fact the country hasn't imploded is testament to the strong nature element as opposed to nurture.
ReplyDeletethe japs are a bit weird with their porn manga - businessmen will read it openly on the train and people sitting/standing beside them all look at the same time, even gesturing if he turns the page too soon for them.
@adam
spitting in your aunties soup, dropping litter, and taking pokemon cards. you make me laugh, keep it up :)
another good psycho character is veronica in 'better off ted'
good somatic malignant narcissist is stirling archer in 'archer'. both series recommended.
Stealing pokemon cards, chopping someone to peices, it's all the same.

Why/how? Is it because I don't give you my precious time sweetie? It's okay uncle Adam will fill the void that daddy left.
I think you're the only one blind to how awful you are Adam. Now go write your own blog instead of whoring yourself out on here.
ReplyDeleteJust kidding! Spitting in soup, throwing small pieces of fruit at dogs, stealing pokemon cards. You're so hardcore I can scarcely believe it. I just admire you sooooo much.
I'd do it on yours but nobody reads it lol.

What would be the need then for the sociopath to move like a wolf amidst the sheep? Sounds to me like you're overlooking necessity. Why would I want to be a wolf in that society? I would work LESS and gain MORE by being even more sheep like, specifically from kindness and sharing. And then I'd get bored and kill you because in that society, inside looking out, you would wonder what Aspies would be like in an individualist society. On desolate Mars you will ask me what the Auties would do if society existed on earth in mass.
"Why? Because i liked pokemon? Lol you are an idiot, have you watched the show? If you did then you'd know it's pretty fucking brutal."
ReplyDeleteFunniest thing I've heard all day.
Pokemon is pretty fucking brutal...
Right ;)
Exactly. Pokemon is brutal. These people go around enslaving sentient creatures which they force to fight for their amusement. Then occasionally they rape one of the Pokemon. Crazy shit. XD
ReplyDeleteYes it is, everything in the show is about conflict, it pictures Ash a young fatherless egomaniac out to conquer the world, with his two under acheiving friends who only serve to bolster Ash's superiority, then there is Gary, a rival of Ash whom Ash is extremely envious of. Ash envies Gary's success with women, a trait Ash will never have due to his extreme narcissistic mother issues, and all around fear of intimacy, Ash is also an animal abuser, he sends forth is beloved pokemon recklessly into battle, not caring about any damage the receive, as he looks on smugly from the sideline, waving his badges around like some puppeteer master general.
ReplyDeleteif you think pokemon is brutal you'd probably have fit if you watched casino.
ReplyDeleteKeeping going Adam. I'm fucking rolling around in my chair laughing right now. GO GO GO.
ReplyDeleteyour just as obnoxious as adam, kesu(just saying).
ReplyDeleteAnd you just as anonymous as the other anons. How about that? We are both like someone else. We could start clubs.
ReplyDeleteclubs? no thanks, you're too obnoxious, it would never work!
ReplyDeleteAm i Ash ketchum? O.O
ReplyDeleteI need a Gary Oak, who is my Gary Oak?
The only way in which Ash sees his women is through dominance. Forcefully and without mercy he rapes Misty, but this only happens when the camera is off, when the camera is on him, he is a charismatic yet self centered individual. The only way he can interact with Misty is if she is his non involved sex bitch. Brock or brocolli is the character with BPD and a person that nobody cares about, he hates what Ash is doing to Misty yet won't intervene, this is due to his severe fear of Ash abandoning him and laying him to the curb like a used condom.
ReplyDeleteI got bored reading all this crap, but anyway...you stupid cunts.
ReplyDeleteI would explain, but you're too fucking dumb.

ReplyDeleteNews of the Decade:
ReplyDeleteZhawq is no longer to be called a Psychopath by anyone, as he had his Psychopathy Diagnosis recanted earlier this very day!
An Asperger's Diagnosis established instead!
Don't be shy now: Come forth and congratulate me, you antisocial lot you!
We all knew it, what did i say earlier? I'm a fucking genius. They write long boring drivel that nobody cares about, and what did you all do instead? Go on his blog and treat him like a psychopath, you are worse than non psychopaths for getting duped, don't beleive anyone until you have proof.
ReplyDelete(Hint: Read the Date)
ReplyDeleteSo i want to ask you, why the wolf? I'm a psychopath and I automatically know that, that would be looked down upon on a sociopath blog, it reminds me of M.E with the sociopath world t shirts, he is another closet aspie.
ReplyDeleteOh and I don't mean that in a bad way M.E.
ReplyDeleteAdam,
ReplyDeleteyou're an AsPD-er with narcissistic tendencies, and that is very different from Psychopathy.
I have no need for telling you why I use the Wolf Head avatar at present. Just rest assured, there's a reason for everything, and not everything is what it seems.
Your very words about how you automatically would know an avatar like mine would be looked down upon on a Sociopath board says it all!
You seem to have missed how important it is to be smart if you want to make it as a psychopath or sociopath, or as an AsPD'er such as yourself.
You are displaying a level of ignorance that is quite frankly embarrassing, Adam.
No intelligent Psychopath would care one fucking shit about what others think. Least of all on a comment board! Investing your energy in gaining cyber respect is foolish beyond foolish and something only a Narcissist or an Empath would do!
I have told you this before, I can tell you again, since I understand you're a bit slow:
I am not writing on this board for you, nor in order to gain status among a group of kids and people I'll never meet or have any gain from in reality anyway.
I have my reasons for posting, but they are not what you think.
It should be obvious to you, but then, you're both not intelligent and not a psychopath, you're just a narcissistic child.
Talk about people missing cues - I can tell you right now, that most of those who have seen your posts are laughing their asses off! You are the common laugh of this board, Adam. Sad, but true. Nobody are fooled by you.
You could learn from some of the kind that you admire, if you wanted to, but you don't, so you won't.
So be my guest and get yourself an avatar that everybody will admire you for having because of it's Sociopathic quality. LMAO
Again, and just as frankly, you're an idiot. There's no more to it, and you'll get played again, and again, and again, until some day you go and shoot yourself from embarrassment when you realize how pathetic someone like you look in the eyes of those that you so admire.
I fooled ya, and I did it EASILY! Can you read that word? It said Easy, and it sums you up.
Get dry behind your ears before you try to out someone you don't know anything about. You look incredibly stupid as it is, and you're making it worse with your chatter.
ME!! Durarara is such an amazing show, needless to say I've been following it for awhile and started reading the manga translations fairly recently afterwards.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to point out some differences in the durarara you've seen and what I know from reading/watching it. For all its worth (whatever): ^^
I don't know which durarara you've seen, but in the anime, the girl he had hired somebody to kidnap was supposed to meet up with him irl so they can commit suicide together. After the rescue (by Izaya's hired rescuer),she goes to meet her 'real rescuer' up on the roof. Izaya proceeds to point out that the girl's experienced 'gratitude' when she was rescued is contradictory to her desire to die earlier (just as Izaya had hypothesized). She jumps off the roof to prove Izaya wrong.
The Hospital scene, I've only read about in blog translations of the manga (so we may be looking at different translations here). from what I've read, the girl who went to 'visit' Izaya in the hospital had been one of his previous victims. A hobby he sometimes does to people he talks to in suicide forums(they arrange to meet to die together). And again Izaya mocks their (there were two women) resolve to die, also stating that they should thank him because he basically just saved their life. But the woman who tries to kill him in the hospital ended up being stuffed in a large bag (separate from her other female companion) after Izaya drugs them in one of his sessions. She attacks Izaya because of her desire for vengeance.
Izaya is such an amazing character indeed!! sexy, smart, and devious all in one package lol just sayin. keep up the good work ME! :D
P.S I've been lurking. ^^
-saihtlen ^^
What is an AsPD-er? I know it's anti social pd but what is YOUR definition of that.
ReplyDeleteI got to admit, as narcissistic as Notable is, i can relate to his posts, from reading his blog i could have written the same about me.
ReplyDeleteJesus Christ those Manga nerds can go at it. Congratulations on enjoying the cultural cartoon equivalent of a Pulp.
ReplyDeleteAdam is the ten year old, unknown equivalent of the Ma-Sheen, here. Completely bombastic and over-the-top when he has no right to, and frankly, I think it is hilarious. Serious business Pokemon cards, psychoanalyzing cartoon characters, tossing fruit at dogs. It's just too rich not to laugh. If you can't appreciate the humor, intended or not, then you're missing out.
It's ok, Adam. One day you might grow up to be as Narcissistic as me, and then we can rule the world together until one of us eventually betrays the other. Just don't resort to murder. I'm much prefer to retire to a villa.
LOL, Adam. You're so clueless. You're obviously a narc.
ReplyDeleteOh, and FINALLY, Zhawq says something that doesn't count as utter pseudo-intellectual bullshit. Well done Zhawq.
ReplyDelete
