A reader sent me this article in the NY Times profiling a pioneer in treatments for borderline personality disorder, who also suffers from borderline personality disorder herself. There are some interesting parallels and some good suggestions for anyone who is seeking to control their behavior:
She borrowed some of these from other behavioral therapies and added elements, like opposite action, in which patients act opposite to the way they feel when an emotion is inappropriate; and mindfulness meditation, a Zen technique in which people focus on their breath and observe their emotions come and go without acting on them. (Mindfulness is now a staple of many kinds of psychotherapy.)I wonder whether someone will ever develop a treatment for sociopaths who have poor behavior control. I think it will happen, I just wonder what it will look like.

I just posted this story on my blog yesterday. It's nice to hear a story of hope for a change.
ReplyDeleteNot too mention I think one of the biggest points was to derail some of the stigma that surrounds BPD and mental health issues in general. It is possible to suffer with this stuff and lead a functional life, at least by surface appearances.
My therapist uses DBT techniques coupled with various other therapy treatments. Some stuff works, other stuff doesn't. The trick is to find that individual combination that works.
I think it is possible to develop treatment for sociopaths who have poor behavior control. However, the real trick is... the only way therapy of any sort actually works, is if it the person wants it to and has made the decision to achieve that end goal.

If someone is a loose canon and will destruct at random or at any small slight, how safe are they? However if they want to learn to control that impulse so they no longer lash out violently at the drop of a hat... it would make them less dangerous.
If they wanted to control the impulse with motives to channel it into a more subtle plot of revenge... well, yeah = more dangerous.
Sociopaths with poor behavioral controls are screwed for good, they are less intelligent. I'm not talking about factor 1 predatory rapists or con artists (these are calculated with their violence and barely ever get caught)

ReplyDeleteOne of the key differences between bpd and psychopathy, is borderlines can have people that they respect, admire or even love, where psychopaths have a "me against the world" attitude, everyone is a target it deosn't matter who they are. Borderlines can show genuine concern for others and can actually go out of there way or put their own health at risk to help someone out. A psychopath will never put someone before him/her.

There are many similarites. Actually the Borderline and Narcissist both are wrapped up in thier own universe with little or no concern for others and how their behavior affects others. However the N is wrapped up in his own self image and buries his emotions while the BPD is wrappd up in thier imediate needs and have no control over their own emotions. The BPD is capable of empathy however because they have feelings for themselves as far as pain rejection etc. She only seems to empathize with you for a while only and *ONLY IF* it pertains to her universe.
ReplyDeleteNPD expects others to revolve around his universe as if to be a satellite dependent on worshipping him as a god. While the BPD wraps her universe around you as if to FUSE your very existense to themselves, you are her universe. Both NPD and BPD are extremely fearfull of abandonment but handle it in two different ways. BPD will cling to you while the NPD ever concious of his self image will abandon you before you have a chance to abandon him. Both of them have excessive Rage emotions built up. The BPD will dump on you while the NPD dumps you alltogether. ( I use male for NPD and female for BPD because that is how the genders are likey to be diagnosed - however either geneder can suffer from either disorder)
BPD has an arrested emotional development set at age three while NPD is set at age six. Some authorities suggest its all all along the same continuim as Narcissistic Personality Disorder. With NPD at one end and BPD at the other. They are both in the same "B" cluster of personality disorders also with histrionic and antisocial personality disorders. IN fact many BPDS have been co-morbidly diagnosed as also having NPD. The degree of functionality among three of them is something like this Histrionics are more able to function in society than narcisssists who in turn fare better than Borderlines.
Those close to Borderline or Narcissist will find ways to deal with them are very much the same. Also the effect they have on others close to them are stikingly similar. Manipulating, lies, deception, self centeredness. and most of all a complete lack of concern for anyone but themselves. They just chose to cover it up in different ways.
I know all this because my so called "mother" was a full blown (diagnosed) Borderline Personality Disorder and eventually got locked up because of it. I have also had two "relationships" with NPDs decades apart. Looking back the characteristics of them were nearly identical to Mommie dearest. They just concaeled thier true intentions better. The first one I had no realization what was going on until it was too late and I'd been burned - Bad. the second one i found out just in time and GOT OUT!
Anyone that has been raised by a borderline or narcissist will have a tendency to attract N's because they have already been "trained". If you even think you are getting involved with one of either get out now. They are nothing more than a parasite set to suck the very life out of you.

There's no doubt research is being done with this in mind. All the antisocial minorities are found to have symptoms akin to ADHD, and there're already a variety of medications for ADHD.
Over a decade ago, before I was sentenced the last time, I was diagnosed with ADHD and was given ADHD medications. I went through all the types, but none of them had any effect at all, except for the side effects (some of which were fairly neat). I know other psychopaths have had the same result.
But perhaps it will lead to something for sociopaths (and maybe even AsPD'ers).

She's right. Some of the most creative people I've met were BPD'ers. Two of my women long term relationships were BPD'ers. You just need to understand them and what their issues are, and you'll be fine and have some of the greatest, loyal loved ones you can ever have.
IMO Jesus is nothing but a giver. That's not a complete human.
