The Joker

For those of you doing Comic Con this weekend in person or remotely, from the Huffington Post, a psychoanalysis of the Joker:
"In fact, particular patterns of behavior or personality traits -- what we call psychopathy -- are much more commonly seen in serial murderers," Pozios said.

Bender uses the example of the Joker, the most famous Batman villain, as a character who has incorrectly been called "psychotic" many times throughout Batman's 72-year history.

"Someone who is 'psychotic' is experiencing symptoms of psychosis, a mental disorder, which can include auditory hallucinations, such as hearing voices; visual hallucinations, where they see objects that are not truly there; or have delusional thoughts, despite evidence to show that such beliefs are incorrect -- such as believing that one's movements are being tracked by deep space satellites -- or disorganized behavior," Bender said. "In the vast majority of depictions, the Joker is not experiencing such symptoms; rather, the Joker has shown symptoms of psychopathy."

Bender says psychopathy is a personality construct and not a diagnosis of a mental disorder.

"Psychopathy reflects interpersonal characteristics and behavior that are often rooted in a lack of empathy," Bender said. "In the comics, television shows, and films, the Joker is much more akin to a psychopath and is not psychotic."

Although some snarky fans might suggest that the Joker just be put on Prozac, Bender says that's the sort of incorrect assumption he's trying to fight just as passionately as the Caped Crusader combats crime.

"Psychopaths are not prescribed medications to treat their psychopathic personality traits," Bender said. "They would be prescribed medication if they had a mental disorder, such as major depressive disorder or bipolar disorder, that causes clinically significant distress or impairment in functioning. In the vast majority off depictions, the Joker does not exhibit signs or symptoms of these or other mental disorders for which medication would be appropriate; therefore, we would not prescribe him any medication."
What about Batman? Isn't that why their feud is so much more entertaining to us than any of the other villains, is that Batman and Joker are really just two sides of the same coin?

  2. I looked into your very question less than a year ago regarding an early blog post of mine, ME. I found out that Batman apparently has changed a lot over the years depending who is writing him, but the modern day Batman/Bruce Wayne is essentially a Sociopath with a 'predicament' that few Sociopaths start with early in life. He started with Power, Control and Money.

Obviously, having these things from early childhood would vastly change and shape a young Sociopath in ways we simply haven't seen very often in any notable non-fiction figure. The motivations in life would be far simpler, petty even, considering what he already has. So why not act under the pretense of fighting crime when in reality it's just a good excuse to kick some ass and keep the property value high in a city you practically own?

Obviously, motivations in life would be a mix of conscious and subconscious. But that is why the dynamic between the Joker and Batman, the modern versions, are so entertaining. You can't help but wonder that they are in fact both sides of the same coin. The big difference is that one has an interest in preservation of what is valuable, and a prosthetic moral compass to keep himself in check, something not completely alien to some Sociopaths. The Joker on the other hand is more of an unleashed True Blue psychopath who cares more about fulfillment through chaos, and thanks to Batman, he has an infinite supply of entertainment.

They were made for each other. Literally and figuratively.

  3. The Joker seems like a classic psychopath. As you said, it does not seem like a mental disorder where they would need drugs to regulate their daily functioning.
I guess a psychopath is a totally unique animal .That what might be what everyone is getting at when it is all said and done.

  4. I think my father always knew i was a sociopath, i took a look at my infancy, i remembered so many things...
Now i am sure i am a sociopath, and i've been sloppy later, now i wonder if my psychologist also knew what i was 5 years ago.
People around me started to figure things out, i now see that there are much more psychopaths than what people think there are.
I'll talk to my daddy, i'll confront him, the way he treated people around him it's pretty much like me, i also wonder if he is also a psychopath, one moment he was stone cold, the other he was crying, and my brother, the damn kid has problems because of me, because of what i did to him, i think he is afraid of me, i dont remember all the things i did but it was bad, i think i will apologise, i've recently found out that he's on a psychologist and was prescribed an anti-depressant Sertralina, i took one of his pills yesterday and shit i sensed things in a much different way it was beautiful...

  6. Humour is often antagonistic. I'll poke a bit of fun at people just when their anger is at a high. Some can get really pissed. -Because everyone knows there is truth to humour. I do think I get off on it. Is it sadistic? Hmm idk. I'd also like to clear the room of their anger so I tend to think not. But it's a form of taking control of the room. Joking serves so many different purposes. I wonder if it is a part of narcissism.

I've never "felt" antagonistic or grandiose about it. But it does belittle people, I suppose. Is this abusive?? Idk. Sometimes they look at me like I'm either cruel or weird. If they "get me" they just think I'm eccentric. My goal is not to make them feel bad. It's a Little about making them feel good. <<See, this is another reason I think it's narcissistic behavior.

I don't believe mere eccentricity is sociopathic or psychopathic. But I have a friend who will say I live in my own head. This I do buy. My mind is quick. I think voicing my thoughts is an impulse control problem.

Comedians get a bunch of flack for being "insensitive." Most I wouldn't consider psychopathic. Narcissistic, maybe?

    ReplyDelete
  10. @Anon 4:04
I think that is classic for psychopathic behavior--almost defining it.
    What do you all think?
I have never seen an empath do that

    ReplyDelete
  11. I do it. So does my Dad. My Mom doesn't cry, but she'll joke very inappropriately -surprise!

    ReplyDelete
  12. anon4:04, I think he faked it, he never cried in front of me, only in front of my mother, and i can clearly see that she was being emotionally manipulated by him.

anon4:08, I didnt really feel anything, but the colors were much more vivid, and it was like a weight that had just been pulled out of my shoulders. What do you mean by sensitive to medicine?

    ReplyDelete
  13. @ Erin "I have never seen an empath do that."

    I see it frequently

    ReplyDelete
  14. @Anon 4:18
Let me describe what I have only seen in my Socio.
He would be super ,super in to anger like intense anger and emotion.

Then, he would stop in an instant-in a second and go cold.

I have never seen am empath do that. They wind down.

What I am describing is the Socio going from 100 mph to 0.
The empath goes from 100 mph to 60 to 40 to 0.

By this definition,my mother is not a Socio.

  15. Well I've never taken Sertralina but I've used many antidepressants and on the first pill I feel nothing. They typically take a few weeks to kick in. And I've never felt colors or beauty or pleasurable weightlessness. Maybe I should try that drug, lol. Your description sounds more like a reaction to a recreational drug.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Erin is right, the feelings of emapths dont just fade away from one moment to another, they change from one to another slowly.
I also noticed that many times in myself, so i try to do the same still sometimes i forget to do it.

  17. I know many Narcissists. Their anger winds down .It does not stop on a dime.

  18. Erin, my guy was like that. Funny, I told my psychiatrist and I'm pretty sure she mentioned some add meds would have helped him. She's worked in the prison system.

I've gone from intense anger to coldness, but I've never thought it was sociopathic. Bipolar, yes.

    ReplyDelete
  19. @Anon 4:29
Well, was yours like an INSTANT change ---from intense heat to intense cold?
That is what I am describing--almost a boiling to almost afreezing.

  20. I did smoke a joint by the morning, but i took the pills at around 17:30h the effects of THC and cannabidiol were gone by then.
I also experienced many of the secondary effects headaches, diarrhea, sickness, i woke up shacking, i took 100mg which is half the maximum they recommend per day

  21. I have gone cold after a rage because I check it. It feels like a release. Rage is funny that way to me. Even during it -the action of having a tantrum- I can sometimes see it on the outside as a nice release but not necessarily necessary. I can sometimes either rage or go cold. I have varieties. It doesn't happen too often so my memory may be faulty, also.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I'd say you had a combo effect and a far as the side effects taking half recommended may be too soon.

-Some drugs you start out on very small dosages.

But I'm not a doctor and everyone is different and I don't know anything about sertralina

  24. the incorrect use of the term "psychotic" when "psychopathic" is what is meant or correct is quite common

    TNP said:

"Obviously, having these things from early childhood would vastly change and shape a young Sociopath in ways we simply haven't seen very often in any notable non-fiction figure"

    How do you know that?

a rich sociopath is simply a sociopath who can do more harm earlier, perhaps in a more refined way with better manners.. having wealth or power is not an end goal of the S, it is a constant need

Batman, vigilante or whatever he is, is not a 'path... the joker is though

    ReplyDelete
  25. I have to think back. Yes in the car with the ex I distinctly remember raging and then joking he had a bullshitometer on his dashboard. We laughed. But maybe that was cause it was him and he and I raged and cracked up after. I never had a ridiculous screaming and stamping around tantrum in front of him though. He was pretty scary! Like a caricature. I think he wound down sometimes but not in the car that day. He was acting that day. Or maybe that was ordinary anger from him and rage from me.

Actually the last time I raged was by myself, and I did'nt "need" to wind down because I let it ride on ad on till I was finished. It was different that any other rage I have ever had.

I'd like to think back on my childhood before being medicated.

My behavior with the ex was cold and calculated after displaying my anger. But I had been expecting these emotions. I predicted the day. I was waiting for it. It drove him bananas.

Here is a take from the Behring guy. Following his logic we should now be mad at every European, and every Christian just because there are now right-wing Christian terrorists with the adored light skin and blue eyes.

By the way, he was raised by an adoring mother and an absent yet powerful diplomat father. His father left, married another woman and moved out of the country and totally dumped seeing him when he noticed 'unruly' behavior in his teenage years.Talk about a ripe environment for an NPD. Plus all the looks. Yikes....

"And then we have the relationship between conservative Muslims and so-called "moderate Muslims". There is moderate Nazis, too, that does not support fumigation of rooms and Jews. But they're still Nazis and will only sit and watch as the conservatives Nazis strike (if it ever happens). If we accept the moderate Nazis as long as they distance themselves from the fumigation of rooms and Jews?....For me it is very hypocritical to treat Muslims, Nazis and Marxists differ. They are all supporters of hate-ideologies. Not all Muslims, Nazis and Marxists are conservative, most are moderate. But does it matter? A moderate Nazi might, after having experienced fraud, choose to be conservative. A moderate Muslim can, after being refused to enter a club, be conservative, etc."

As the hero, he believes he would have to maintain more composure, and stealth, and a well defined torso. Once the mask is on, all expression becomes frozen, and his humor; if he even has it, becomes dry. He wants to grow an empire, craving wealth, power, and glory.

As the villain, he believes he can let the shit hit the fan, he can add more color, and show the twisted side of his humor. Through this character he can role play more. Have his naughty fun. He is an unstoppable force till death, because he values absolutely nothing.

  52. @TNP OMG I was going to call batman a Sociopath too. I had that discussion with a couple of coworker not to long ago. When I explained how batman fit the profile one coworker said "Doesn't he have any redeeming traits" I damn nearly slapped the shit out of him. However, I instead explained how good and evil didn't really apply and it was just all situational. That those very traits were the ones that allowed him to do what he did without constantly breaking down in his regular life. After all how can you fight a monster without being a little monstrous yourself?

    ReplyDelete
  53. Kesu, a great film which addresses this concept of the Hero/Villain or 'unleashing the monster to fight the monster' is the Japanese film "12 Assassins."

  57. 1. Glibness/superficial charm
Batman has no charisma, when do you ever see him with a girl? Even the police can't stand him.

    2. Grandiose sense of self-worth -
He doesn't think highly of himself and you never hear Batman make grandiose boasts, nor does he think he is superior to anyone other than criminals (all empaths think they are superior to criminals)

    3. Pathological lying -
    No.

    4. Cunning/manipulative -
    Relatively.

    5. Lack of remorse or guilt
Batman cares deeply about the public and would never watch a person get robbed without intervening.

    6. Emotionally shallow -
    Explained in 5.

    7. Callous/lack of empathy -
He beats up criminals which cops and vengeful emotion driven empaths do all the time, he would never finish off a person who is unable to fight back, which psychopaths can do with glee.

    8. Failure to accept responsibility for own actions -
    No

Conclusion = Batman is an uber empath aka anti psychopath.

  59. Look at this point. Batman lives a double life. Bruce Wayne is impulsive, lacks regard for social graces and doesn't really care who he fucks in business. As long as he has control and everyone listens to him he doesn't move against them. How often have we seen Bruce smile and crack jokes just to turn around and have that nothing on his face. This is something I often do. When I am appearing the jovial sort the moment I no longer have to appear that way I go blank again. You can call it just keeping appearances but for the majority of people who have normal thought patterns the duality that exist in his life would cause sever emotional disruption and stress. Bruce does it with ease and grace.

Now Batman betrays others easy. He betrayed his teacher. He had no problem with it either. He burned down the entire clan home and did it without the least bit of affect to him. He faces danger with ease. No fear. He is emotionally detached.

Bruce in truth doesn't really connect to people. Think of all those that have left him or that he has left behind. He isn't that worried about them coming into or out of his life. He never really tries to stop them either. He does the I don't want you to go but bye.

    ReplyDelete
  62. You are a fool Kesu, why do you think batman was created in the first place? Batman was an empaths wet dream manifest, a person who fought the badness in the world and kept all the little do gooders safe. Batman wouldn't have the callousness to murder a child or an old timer, which in turn a psychopath could do if they really wanted to. Batman would have severe flashbacks and we'd be fucking hearing about it until the day he died. Then he would go on some uber empath crusade against all child murderers to redeem himself.

If you think Batman is a psychopath you are a deluded moron that knows nothing about psychopathy, but i suppose you would call him "high functioning"

  69. I haven't been able to tell his ability to foresee consequences. He lives in a world with no accountability. No one can tell him not to do anything. He is the richest man. He is the boss. He hides his identity to protect himself. Is that an ability to foresee consequences not sure. I doubt it though. Hell even Bundy knew not to get caught by the cops.

As Bruce he does consistently lie. Everything about Bruce is a lie. A facade put up just so no one suspects him of being the Bat. Also, Bruce dropped out of college to run around Asia doing violence to criminals.

    A couple truths about empaths.
    1. They need social contact. They need connections. Isolation deteriorates them.
    2. They have a need to follow norms. Norms are taught, so they are highly related to environment. They are inhibitors to actions.
    3. They feel others pain. Not just know it is there but feel it. I can not stress the feel it part enough. Without the ability to feel others pain others pain become inconsequential.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I believe Batman is portraying a Sociopath. Anyone who calls him otherwise, may do so because they don't want their precious ideals torn down, and their fairytale heroes tainted.

But one of the beauties of the Comic Book world, is that there are no clearly drawn out boundaries.
In a fairytale, the bad guys only do evil things, and the good guys only do one of 2 things:
    1. Is the foolish good guy, who makes worldly
mistakes, but is reformed by the end of the story by...
2... the good guy who always does the right thing.

In a comic book story, boundaries get crossed. Wrong might only mean hurting people with malicious intent, without a specific group benefiting from the act. And that must be confusing, even scary to people who define right and wrong, in black and white terms.

In black and white thinking, there has to be a clear way to know for sure, who is who. The grey is very scary.

    ReplyDelete
  80. "Uhhh Did my comment mean that?"

  82. Are you comfortable with being a whore ?

    ReplyDelete
  83. @Kesu
"I will ask it in a simpler way. If a person told you his dog died. What would you feel ?"

I had a friend whose dog died. Now all my other friend planned to go over to her house and comfort her. I planned to go play poker. I did just that. However, I ended up being card dead and the tourny was a speed one. So I went to meet up with the friends.

Once I got there I said that I had left the game early so that I could come be with her. I compulsively lie like this often. Turning a situation that was a loss into a positive for myself. It makes me look like a good person.

I'm not that good at comforting. If I have to play that part I tend to just shut up and nod or crack jokes because in truth I am terrible at comforting people. So as the night went on she went through the normal waves of loss. She laughed and then started crying and then smiled and then cried. Sadness comes in waves. Laughing and smiling is a defense mechanism.

At the end of the night as we all talked and she had become less emotional I said "You know if it was anyone else I would have told them to just get the fuck over it.". The look of horror that spread across everyone's face was obvious. At which point everyone else started to tell me how horrible they would feel if their pet died.

None of it made real sense to me. First I thought we were all "comforting" her because she was a weak emotional woman. Had it been a man I would have told him he was a pussy and to get up and over it.

Next it was just an animal. I have owned many dogs. I remember one particular time where my step father ran over my dog. He drove off. I started to get mad but he was gone so I just said fuck it and went back inside to do what I was doing without so much as a slight hint of sadness. In fact I left the dog where she was hit.

I like whores. They know what they want and are easy to do what you want with. The only negatives about a whore are the moral implications. So... to me there are none.

    Or

The Joker is God. A completely indifferent creator, forming from the chaos which he himself revels in. Batman is a spoiled child cast out from the safety of his home and now is looking for as much attention as he can find.

  132. wut yu talkin bout erinz??

    ReplyDelete
  133. Alright. I got a question. Just something I've been noticing from people who call themselves empaths or highly sensitive.

I don't believe in anything. I am disillusioned. There is no god. I have no real belief system. There is no good or evil. So on and so forth.

So I watched that video with the crappy bear and her use of the term "Dark Soul". I would very rarely use a term like that and only in a jargon type of way. Now what I am actually after though is the fact that she believes in souls. She obviously does. I've seen others who believe is charkas and other mystical things. So just putting it out there to everyone who believes in that crap and why?

    ReplyDelete
  134. So just putting it out there to everyone. Who believes in that crap and why?

    ReplyDelete
  135. I may be an uber empath or something entirely different. I don't believe in any of that bullshit. I think the need for such things represents an insecurity in your own sense of Self and a need for fairy tales to romanticize an accidental existence.

    ReplyDelete
  136. kesu, the answer to your question is... you're a faggot.

    ReplyDelete
  137. @Kesu
That question is one everyone should ask. If you believe in God then you should be able to get there with your intellect.
If not, it is garbage. If things will not stand up to RADICAL scrutiny, they are not worth holding dear.
You must be able to throw them up ,down and around and they still maintain their truth.
If not ,the whole thing is garbage.

However,to answer with details, well I have so many I just don't know where to begin.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Everything in the universe is ordered. If you go small in to Physics there is exquisite order. If you go large in to Biology,Botany or Anatomy ,there is exquisite order.

Order is one sign of a Creator

    ReplyDelete
  139. Anyone should be able to ask any question and get an answer that makes logically and intellectual to the human mind--totally .That would be 85 % of it.
    The last 15% is faith.

    ReplyDelete
  140. Faith is what people have when they're too lazy, or too unwilling to accept the fact that thusfar humanity has limitations and simply can't explain everything through science yet. Rest assured, all things have answers, even if we don't have the technology to prove it yet.

    Faith is for fools.

    ReplyDelete
  141. uggghhh......erin.....you shit.....see what you've done now kesu?.....ugh

    *facepalm*

*lights cigarette and slumps back in chair*

    ReplyDelete
  144. @Haven
Well, everyone has free will to choose.
However, how does one explain ORDER without a Creator of that order?
Did you ever study Botany or Biology?
Everything is ordered down to the smallest unit.
    HOW did that happen?

    ReplyDelete
  145. Richard Dawkins is one of the worst writers ever. He makes valid arguments but is so boring, and makes so many references, it's nearly impossible to get through his writing.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Order is not a sign of a creator and the idea that it is absurd. The only way human life could exist is for there to be order. Because there is order we exist if there wasn't we wouldn't. Look into inflation theory. It explains why our universe can sustain life.

    ReplyDelete
  147. It's probably the only way it could.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Erin, why did you answer Frank's question with "spit" as soon as he asked it?

What were trying to achomplish, use some discernment. Not ever thought needs to leave your head.

Kesu, where when your body dies do you think your mind, the part that operates in your head goes?

Just up in smoke? Or is the essence of who you are, the energy that is your's alone that makes you you and seperates you from everyone is your spirit.

Hard to explain to someone that doesn't have a conscience.

    ReplyDelete
  149. @tik

    spit or swallow?

    ReplyDelete
  150. Most sociopaths are agnostic.

    ReplyDelete
  151. No there are four main forces that governor our universe: electromagnetic energy, gravity, strong force, and weak force. Each one has a sub-atomic particle related to it with the exception of gravity. However, one theory on that involves the higgs field.

    ReplyDelete
  152. Her use of the term "Dark Soul" is a simple form of brain washing. Sort of like the way adults brain wash children.
If you tell someone they are dealing with person without conscience, they still try to reason with it.
They may say things like, "Well some day he'll regret what he's done.", or "He's just angry!"
However, if you adopt a term that speaks to their superstitious side, like "Dark Soul", you are now talking about things like the Devil, and demons.
They seem to understand better, when you make it a nonhuman, or other worldly thing.

    ReplyDelete
  153. @Kesu What is inflation theory?

    Tik
    @ Well I answered "spit"---So?
Tik--you HAVE to be an Aqua sun.No one but an Aquarius Sun would be so freakin' annoying as to say something like that.

  155. "Just up in smoke? Or is the essence of who you are, the energy that is your's alone that makes you you and seperates you from everyone is your spirit.

Hard to explain to someone that doesn't have a conscience."

What does conscience have to do with believing in that bullocks?

    ReplyDelete
  156. @Kesu
You have to just think of the Space Shuttle or a jet--HOW could they just happen without a Creator?
    No way!

    ReplyDelete
  157. "Kesu, where when your body dies do you think your mind, the part that operates in your head goes?"

It stays in my body. I have no fear of death. So I have no need to look for something after death. The idea that there is more after this is retarded. You decay and rot. Your personality is just a piece of what your brain does. You don't think your brain goes on regulating temperature after you die in some strange world after this? Why would you think that your personality goes on without the thing holding it?

    ReplyDelete
  158. "Up in smoke...."

You assume there's something like a soul to begin with. Once you accept the fact that we operate on an atomic level you understand that there is no soul to dissipate. Besides, nothing goes from something to nothing. There must alwaays be conservation.

    ReplyDelete
  159. Anyone ever have OBE--Out of Body Experiences.
I have .There is nothing like it.
It shows that your consciousness exists apart from your body

    ReplyDelete
  160. Erin, are you serious? How could a space shuttle or jet happen without a Creator? Easily. With engineers. Like me. Unless of course, you believe us to be your gods. In which case.... on your knees bitch.

    ReplyDelete
  161. hyper- intellectual drival.

    yawn.

    ReplyDelete
  162. Science is crap too. People speak of science like it some kind of science or something. "Science" is knowledge acquired by and performed by people. People with biases, profit motives, dumbness, and a general bias towards looking at parts separate from the whole. It offers not much of a solution for many of the problems it creates in the first place.

    ReplyDelete
  163. A quick version of inflation.

The big bang was caused by the uncertainty principle which allows for a certain amount of energy to exist from nothing. Inverse gravity happens within the first second of this event. The universe expands in size 1000 times within one second.

Because of all this there are multiple universes(Not dimensions). More pocket universes are being created all the time. Each with it's own unique laws. Ours just happened to be one with the ability to create us. An accident. A causality. In an infinite universe whatever can happen MUST happen at some point in time. No creator is necessary.

    ReplyDelete
  164. @Haven
What I am saying is that YES the space Shuttle had INTELLIGENCE behind it, an intelligent design.

    HOW LESS THE UNIVERSE?

    ReplyDelete
  165. Nobody knows what happens once you die, i find that atheists generally very pessimistic and self destructive. Optimists are funner to be around than a gloomy cynical atheist. The way i see it is we should create our own reality.

    ReplyDelete
  166. "Anyone ever have OBE--Out of Body Experiences.
I have .There is nothing like it.
It shows that your consciousness exists apart from your body"

No it doesn't. Your brain takes in a massive amount of information. It can also create images. It is called an imagination. You put those two together and store it in the form of a memory you have an out of body experience.

    ReplyDelete
  167. Guess what erin, your wrong, so swollow that.

  171. i don't find that sociopaths have a strong belief system.

Say if an atheist came into a room and began to try to debunk Christians beliefs. the sociopath would claim to be a christian just to fuck with the atheist, the sociopath wouldn't know half as much as the atheist, but he would have people on his side from smear campaigns and his aggressive demeanor.
