Genetically predisposed to crime?

Yes, although that is not the full picture. From the NY Times:
Researchers estimate that at least 100 studies have shown that genes play a role in crimes. “Very good methodological advances have meant that a wide range of genetic work is being done,” said John H. Laub, the director of the justice institute, who won the Stockholm Prize in Criminology last week. He and others take pains to emphasize, however, that genes are ruled by the environment, which can either mute or aggravate violent impulses. Many people with the same genetic tendency for aggressiveness will never throw a punch, while others without it could be career criminals.
***
Kevin Beaver, an associate professor at Florida State University’s College of Criminology and Criminal Justice, said genetics may account for, say, half of a person’s aggressive behavior, but that 50 percent comprises hundreds or thousands of genes that express themselves differently depending on the environment.
The article is interesting because it talks not only about one's childhood environment, but one's current environment. One such environmental factor is marriage:
[Steven Pinker] mentioned one of the biggest risk factors leading to crime: remaining single instead of getting married, a link uncovered by Mr. Laub and Robert J. Sampson, a Harvard sociologist who was a co-winner of the Stockholm Prize. Marriage may serve as a switch that directs male energies toward investing in a family rather than competing with other males, Mr. Pinker said.
For those who are interested in improving their environment in order to maximize self control, this NY Times article about decision fatigue is good. The gist of the article is that you have limited amounts of self control, so don't waste it on unimportant things. Also be very aware of your blood glucose levels-- glucose can erase the effects of decision fatigue. It's oddly a lot of things I have just intuited about myself over the years, but still helpful to learn the science behind it.

  1. Hmmm. To my mind crime is a social construction and deviance is ambiguous – so you can’t be biologically disposed to it. Plus, aggression is a behaviour that doesn't take place in a social vacuum.

Obviously the purpose of criminology is correctional, so I'm not surprised that the study of genes is popular in the field, because it's no doubt seen as an attractive 'solution' to reducing crime rates.

However I don't believe you can predict - and therefore control for - aggression based on a person's genes.

This just about sums it up for me:

"Aggressive deviant acts share so much in common with non-aggressive deviant acts that individuals prone to commit aggressive criminal acts are prone to commit non-aggressive criminal acts as well. Thus, no individual-level trait of aggression is consistent with the results of behavioural research."

As for remaining single being one of the biggest risk factors leading to crime - maybe married men are just more adept at not getting caught, for a myriad of reasons, or domestic violence doesn't count. Then again, 'crime' in this circumstance is not defined.

  2. If you're wordy it's your own fault for being bludgeoned -- we warn potential victims not to be wordy so that bludgeoners who are enraged by wordy people won't bludgeon them. Be more concise, or it will be entirely your fault if you're bludgeoned, and we will be forced to record whether you were blugeoned due in whole or part to your preference for light or dark chocolate on a waxing crescent or waning gibbous moon. Just sayin'.

  4. Its not getting married that flips the 'nice' switch and reduces aggression.

    Its the regular sex.

A man will do quite a lot for good sex, especially if his wants are reciprocated.

maybe married men ARE better at not getting caught, after all, getting caught would ruin the investment they've made with their relationship. They have more to lose, ergo, are more vigilant.

    More science is racist bullshit.

Here's another article based around one study:
    http://www.autismwebsite.com/crimetimes/98b/w98bp8.htm

It asserts that high testosterone (which is partly genetic) and low serotonin (also partly genetic) are causal factors in crime.

Racist fact of the day: African genetics cause them to have higher average testosterone levels. High testosterone levels are theorized to play a causal factor in crime. One possible reason for the high proportion of African criminals.

Science which offends people is not bad science. Science != racism

I think it scares the average control freak to count genetics, because... well isn't that obvious? It is easier for someone to fool themselves into believing they have full control over their environment.
The role genetics play, sets a thing in motion before we even have a mind to understand control.

  54. Humans are quite delusional. Example, we don't attribute 'negative' qualities to animals that we so readily attribute to people. An animal that kills its prey and hoards its food is not considered evil or selfish. But with humans, we place nothing but blame and judgement upon them. When another animal behaves like an animal, we say, that's just natural. When we behave like ourselves, we are told we are unnatural and all wrong. When will we grow out of this self-delusional, self-aggrandising, incorporeal perception of ourselves as something beyond animal, as something beyond the entirely physical composition and drive that is our existence.

I am not reducing our humanity. But it's only when we see things from their source that we can better appreciate and understand the beauty of being human that is what people get so hooked on like a drug.

In summary. People need a lesson in humility, and I believe that. The sociopath perhaps, decides to bring us down to our knees to see that. However, there's never just one perspective to be counted.

  56. I've been on a crime spree since I was fourteen. Back then I did anything. After a while I was with a militant group with a political angle. That got me nothing but prison bars. When I came out of prison I decided I didn't want a political angle anymore, I wanted to use my skills to get power and influence for myself. I learned a lot from that group that I am applying now.
When I got married I didn't stop doing crime, I just normalised it. Now it's just like I'm leaving for work. I go to sleep in the morning and wake up in the afternoon. My wife cooks me up dinner, and I race off in to the night to make some money.
I've recently cut a lot of violence out of my life. I've gone from dealing with hundreds of people to just dealing with four very close associates. I've never been caught doing crime in a career sense. When I go outside the day to day operation and use violence that's when things start going haywire. I used to take things way to far. Sometimes I would use coercion so much that I would enjoy the power I got from it more than just simple manipulation. I love to intimidate people. After so many times of going outside the box people would not associate with me or I would get caught.
I've learned it is better to build a wall around yourself and insulate you from the day to day. There are too many hyenas trying to take down a young lion before he can establish his kingdom. I have to be at such a length where I can make decisions outside of the battlefield instead of making snap decisions in the trenches.

  58. UKan, you use lots of pronoun density, "I, me and myself" Vaknin says that this is a key indicator of a person with pathological narcissism.

"Obama's pronoun density has doubled between January 20, 2009 and October 2009. It then subsided, though it is still about 50% over the level exhibited during his election campaign. This would seem to indicate that his pathological narcissism has been exacerbated in office as he was probably basking in media attention and the trappings of power. The backlash, such as it was, against several of his more egregious behaviours and faux-pas led him to modify his conduct and pay closer attention to his syntax and grammar: Obama is now acting modest. False modesty is another hallmark of raging, malign"

  60. How funny. I've never seen americans so divided on a president. I'm pretty sure it's because they elected a black president for the first time. Just for kicks I looked up obama narcissist and it came up with all these bloggers with a conservitive spin. It looks like they will come up with anything to discredit this black president. It's funny because your current president looks a lot better than your last one. Bush was closer to narcissist than Obama could ever dream to be. You are talking about delsuions of having god ordain him for power and a man who started two wars and turned every country against you. This goes with my theory that a lot of white americans have a deep seeded hatred for black americans.

  62. How can you differentiate between Obama spending a lot of time trying to keep good public relations through media appearances and Obama trying to feed a desire for attention? I doubt someone who 'Feels superior, omnipotent, omniscient, invincible, immune, "above the law", and omnipresent (magical thinking).' would succeed so much.

Bush was nowhere near being sociopathic it's only people who dislike his version of morality that would think that. Bush was a typical bible basher who follows american christian ethics, from the point of view of people with similar ethics he was a saint.

  63. Every single president, prime minister, or dictator fits a npd diagnoses if you want them to fit the bill. What is funny about your country is that a segment of your white population has gone bannannas trying to find anything negative about this paticular president including saying he has a personality disorder. So far what has he done over there that's negative? He tried to pass a health care bill, tried to pull you out of two wars, and extended unemployment. Doesn't really sound like a narcissist to me.

The site I linked to is the definition of antisocial personality disorder which is needed when deciding whether someone fits the criteria.

Gaddafi is a psychopath without a doubt. Naming one trait of the pclr that he doesnt fit doesnt rule him out at all. In fact it's quite the opposite. If he is only one trait down on the scale he is scoring pretty high.
Gadddafi attempted to unify africa under a pan-african federation. His real intention was to make himself a king over all of Africa. The african nations eventually saw through him and decided against the unification. I can remember one leaders quote for his reason why he backed out off the top of my head:
"Gaddafi has two faces. Evil and evil."
It is true that he gave his mercenaries aphrodisiacs to rape more women in order to make the population more docile. He also backed several insurgencies against his enemies, including the Provisional Irish Republican Army, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, and the Red Army Faction in his early years in order to fight imperialism. However once secure against the threat of Europe, Isreal, and United States he started making strange alliances. Like backing the genocide in Dafur in the name of Islam, but backing Milosevic in Bosnia who was Eastern Orthodox.
Gaddafi is one of the longest rulers in history. He's stayed in power through cunning. We are talking about a guy who ran training camps for left wing insurgent groups that were destabilizing several first world nation during the cold war. His main weapon has been causing disorder in his enemies countries. The fact that he was able to survive and stay in power through the collapse of the soviet union and the rise of global capitalism is impressive. The age of information however is going to spell the end to a lot of despots.

  88. Keeping success is the challenge. No one wants to see someone they hate obtain success, so of course they don't want them keeping it.

If anything, when Obama was elected, racists may have been angry that he would have a moment of victory, but were at the very least; happy to open that window of opportunity, to slander him into failure as far as in the public eye.

He was doomed from the beginning. No matter what he does for this country, he will not receive credit for successes.

Same goes for this forum. If you are a known sociopath, you will not get credit here for your success. The majority will find some way to slander you, or attribute your success to some kind of fluke, and go on believing you couldn't possibly keep it.

  89. Crime and violence are prevalent in places that are impoverished, Nero. Your arguement that blacks are predispositioned to crime based on being african is ignorant. Wikipedia notes are not sufficient to reading the entire account of world history rather than small selection to try to prove your point.
Throughout history many people have been conquered and enslaved. When a civilization is conquered and enslaved they will not progress. How long it takes for their culture or civilization to recover culturally, socially, and economically is dependant upon several enviromental factors.
In your country, Nero, blacks have made it out of being second class citizens for how long? Sixty years. In a historical perspective that is barely a breath. It is no coincidence that your prison system is the largest in the world, and it's filled with people who were just barely free from discriminatory practices. Your country still has a very large part of the population that is still against blacks like you and your parents. They are further enraged by having a black president.
I lived in a poor neighborhood and it made me lean towards a life of crime. That's usually the way it goes.

Yet here I am married, with my dog sleeping on my feet, free as a bird, in a house I could only dream of and hardly doing any work at all. I don't listen to the negative nay sayers. People like that always lose in life.

African Americans are actually better off now than if their ancestors had not been captured. They've progressed due to being enslaved. The lifestyle of African Americans is far superior to the lifestyles they would be living had they stayed in Africa.

    >Your country still has a very large part of the population that is still against blacks like you and your parents.

I did this very superficial communications-class, which touched lightly on a multitude of subjects (web design, marketing, event management), and it was just extremely boring. You can't use terms such as 'advanced', 'complex', 'better off' and superior interchangeably. Being 'better of' just because you can look at a lot of Europium changing colour (TV) is completely subjective.

Arguably, in the long run, complexity is not a merit. See for example ants, which haven't changed these past 150.000.000 years and are doing pretty well; and humans, who've been around for only two of those 150 million years and, frankly, aren't doing so well as they like to tell themselves.

    >Being 'better of' just because you can look at a lot of Europium changing colour (TV) is completely subjective.

Their lifestyle is superior from a utilitarian perspective, less malnutrition, disease and a higher standard of living.

    >See for example ants, which haven't changed these past 150.000.000 years and are doing pretty well.

    In terms of surviving.

    >humans, who've been around for only two of those 150 million years and, frankly, aren't doing so well as they like to tell themselves.

The population of humans has increased by more than two thousand percent in 2000 years, they are doing great by the same criteria you set out for ants. Although advances in technology may cause an early extinction.

Maybe so, but they did get a lot of new problems as well, including but not limited to: obesity (and I'm purposefully ignoring the 'They can just choose not to eat' argument), all kinds of new dangers (car accidents, firearms, terrorism and nuclear holocaust, to name a few), materialism and all the worrying that comes with it, racism and living in what can be considered to be a police-state, not to mention that the ones that hit rock-bottom, really hit rock-bottom.

And I said "as they like to tell themselves" to avoid you saying something like that. But honestly? Do you think that having the option to thermonuclearly vapourize every human accomplishment within hours, is better than not having said option at all?

It's really an interesting argument (complexity versus simplicity), because at its core lies 'ignorance is bliss'. I'm not advocating all of humanity going back to houses made of literal and figurative shit, I'm just saying that you can't objectively say one is better than the other.
