Preattentive processing

This was an interesting article discussing the progression of recent research that focused first on fearlessness as an explanation for much of psychopath's behaviors, then to attentional deficiencies (psychopaths don't direct their attention to scary things as much as neurotypicals), and most recently deficits in pre-attentive processing. From the Huffington Post and the author of "On Second Thought: Outsmarting Your Mind's Hard-Wired Habits":
Patrick Sylvers, of the University of Washington, working with Patricia Brennan and Scott Lilienfeld of Emory, suspected that psychopaths may suffer from a deficit in "preattentive processing" -- the constant, automatic scanning of one's surroundings that takes place outside of conscious awareness. Theoretically, if children lack this basic cognitive machinery, they would never learn to decode normal signs of danger, and without this acquired fear, they would fail to socialize into adults with conscience.
***
The scientists gave the boys a visual test that measures unconscious emotional processing. Specifically, they wanted to see if the test subjects, compared with normal boys of the same age, were slower to become aware of fearful faces that were flashed rapidly -- so rapidly that they were not registered by the conscious mind. If so, this would be evidence that the troubled boys are not automatically assimilating threatening cues in their world. They also flashed happy, disgusted and neutral faces for comparison.

The results, reported online in the journal Psychological Science, were clear and provocative. Indeed, they comprise the first evidence ever that kids with psychopathic traits have a significant deficiency in their automatic, unconscious processing of certain cues -- especially fear cues, but also cues for disgust. Fear and disgust are closely related in the primitive mind, and the findings suggest that these troubled kids have a fundamental impairment in recognizing -- "in the blink of an eye" -- any kind of social danger. So perhaps the childhood roots of Hannibal Lecter's murderous personality lay not in fearlessness itself, nor even in his conscious thought processes, but rather in his general social cluelessness.
I hadn't heard the term pre-attentive processing, so I looked at the Wikipedia article for it and wasn't surprised to see that it is also associated with those on the autism spectrum. Apart from that, I still am not quite sure why the lack of preattentive processing would cause attentional problems. Presumably it's because certain things never even show up on the sociopath's radar, so of course they would never consciously/attentively register them?

The subject area is ripe for exploration. If this is a primary causal factor in sociopathic behavior, can this be treated? For instance, the wiki article suggests that by consciously focusing on particular tasks, preattentive processing will improve for information related to those specific tasks. How do preattentive processing defects relate (if at all) to sociopath/autistic supersensitivities or the concept of hyperfocus? Is it like how paraplegic people have super strong arms to compensate for the lost use of their legs? And on a more personal level, could this explain why my learning curve is shaped like an exponential function instead of a gradual increase, i.e. extremely flat at the beginning then sloping steeply up?

As I've said before, I really relate to the attentional theories for sociopathy, I'm very curious to see where this new research leads us.

A quick word on the who wrote the blurb -- this is the guy who advocates in his book that people force more thoughts out of their subconscious and into the conscious mind, something that I have always done both naturally and explicitly. You almost wonder if this guy is not a sociopath himself, or at least has trained himself to see the world more sociopathically. By the way, if you're interested in becoming similarly more sociopathic, Amazon tells me there are a slew of reading options including (according to one reviewer): THE ART OF CHOOSING, THE INVISIBLE GORILLA, THE HIDDEN BRAIN, PREDICTABLY IRRATIONAL, or MISTAKES WERE MADE (BUT NOT BY ME)

The abstract for the paper is here.

  12. Officially psychopathy and sociopathy are both just ASPD, but unofficially, people tend to use your definitions. But there really isn't any kind of consensus on the subject.

Arguably the only difference between those terms is the way the disorder develops and manifests itself. For example: ASPD leans more on nurture, psychopathy is more nature and sociopathy is somewhere in between. ASPD'ers are generally thought to be the low-functioning petrol station robbers, psychopaths tend to be CEO's and once again, sociopathy covers the middle ground.

I'm not trying to make any absolute statements here, these are just what I think to be the generally accepted unofficial definitions of ASPD/sociopathy etcetera etcetera.

  23. What this article explores were the central subject of the last series of tests I was subjected to a few months back.

I didn't know about the primitive mind's association between fear and disgust. I guess it explains my difficulty with recognizing this emotion in people. I always found it annoying because I'm so good at reading people in most other ways.

I've had heard about the Autistic relation from a friend who has Asperger's Syndrome.

Lately I've become more interested in High Functioning Autism, and I've noticed that apparently so are you.
It's interesting - and puzzling - that Aspergers originally was defined as Autistic Psychopathy... or was it Psychopathic Autism?... It always seemed peculiar to me, for my friend is not antisocial in the last, and he's a disaster with social interaction.

But perhaps I've been looking at the wrong places for info that could lead to an explanation. This seems to be a common trait in the human species, however:

We expect to find the truth in bright colors and loud voices. But truth is not color or sound, it's an idea and a thought.

  36. nterestingly enough, narcissim and histrionic disorder are going to be stricken from the upcoming DSM-V. I tend to agree with that assessment of a rework as the true problem in functioning centers on a lack of empathy and/or emotional stability, leaving BPD and Sociopathy in the cluster

  38. wow. I had a friend just recently diagnosed with NPD. He told his family he was going to commit suicide, his family coerced him into an institution, the doc said he can't be helped cause hes in denial -everything is everyone else's fault. He disowned his family over this all. He walks around talking about how great the book "The Secret" is and how it is changing his life. Sad. I mean he is the same guy he has always been--
He does society no harm, though. Is this one of the reasons they are doing away with the diagnosis?

  48. My father (an NPD) didn't have any trouble getting dates / girlfriends. Then again, he wasn't a toothless ventriloquist
    Ike your friend was.

The pattern I saw with him was that he'd change them, somehow. He went after richer, more powerful women, like lawyers, doctors, et cetera. My own mother ran a resort when he met her. Not as as classically prestigious, but still rich and had power to wield. Somehow, he'd convince them they needed him and were worthless without him, so when he'd leave them, they would literally flip the fuck out. One of his girlfriends showed up to our house with an axe. Another became suicidal and ended up losing her job. My mother left her job and lived with her parents for the next few years binging on drugs and is still fucked up to this day, even though she is happily remarried.

I don't understand why, or how they do it. The only girlfriend I've ever tried to psychologically assault was my beeper since she drove me so nuts, and as any beeper will tell you, that won't do shit. They might throw hysterics but it doesn't damage what is already broken.

I wonder if Narcs do this because they are typically less sadistic. It might be some form of redirected rage or subconscious sadism that they use on their family instead of their rivals.

Medusa, Haven, notme, you three claim you have NPD ex boyfriends. What say you?

  57. Great article today, M.E.

For me, Fear, Disgust, and Confusion are sort of like these three facial expressions that I get mixed up with, not so much undetected. Even if I have direct context, sometimes I get them wrong. It's sort of like a shell game. The three look similar, but only one is the right answer.

I wouldn't say I get it wrong most of the time, just that I can get it wrong. Sort of the way when you get older, you can reference previous scenarios, but the next person might break away from the trend.

I'm very surprised (and not in a good way) that Joe Newman wasn't part of this book or research (unless I missed his name somewhere). He's been the leading expert on psychopathic attention deficit issues.

  139. you talk in circles erin.
    making no real point ever.
you never write with any real detail. you repeat yourself forever.
and anything that comes after "I've been thinking" with you is probably a lie. ive never seen anything like it in all my living days,
makes me think of how even more insane you are in person.

  143. I don't know how your mother could bare to fondle in between your fungi-infested legs. If I were your mother, or even your sister, I would drown you in the tub, failing that, I would strangle you, stuff you in the garbage bag, and than watch the garbage men drive off with your corpse. I wouldn't ever put food on the table for your fatass. I hope your son grows up and burdens you, fucking bitch.

  149. Erin, I think we have the kids here whose parents are too fighting the neighbor's over the shit they did today to their pets.

Anon's didn't your mother tell you to take your meds today and NO SUGAR.

  154. Why are you still trying to be me Jason? Well I know why really. It's funny how your completely obsessed with me but also claim to be indifferent to me. You created about three different accounts just to fight me with and one to imitate me. Do you even realise how sad that is? Its funny how your aim in life is to prove that you can beat me but you also claim to have nothing to prove to me. I don't think I've ever seen anything as pathetic as you. You're right up there with Zwang. And "fat slug"? Its good to know that even the names I call you cut so deep that they remain with you forever.

My profile has about 930 views and was created in Jan 2011. Jason is so desperate to convince you all that he's me, he's actually enabled access to his fake account. Just check those details if you can't tell the difference. Anything said after this point isn't me so dont bother responding unless its to humiliate Jason.

  155. Actually Erin was not getting very much attention lately. Then you clowns came on, and changed that today. Now you're giving her what she wants.

    ReplyDelete
  156. I am not concerned with you, you little twat. You are a toy, and I am playing with you. Just like everyone else in your life played with you. I don't know how you can even consider yourself human. You are an object that people pick up, and than throw out in the nearest trashcan without looking back. You are a pamphlet that the santitation workers take a piss on during their break. You are anything but something to be concerned with. You aren't even my bitch, just the gum I spit out.

I know Misanthrope is going to check back about five more times just to see if I posted. He is just as pathetic as me, and I make myself look more pathetic on purpose just to see how low he stoops.
