Sociopaths = introverts?

This is an interesting op ed from The Atlantic about introverts. I identified with a lot of the descriptions. I know a lot of sociopathic leaning folk seem to be extroverts. Maybe it's possible to have both extroverted and introverted sociopaths, and they just differ in how they spend their off time?
Do you know someone who needs hours alone every day? Who loves quiet conversations about feelings or ideas, and can give a dynamite presentation to a big audience, but seems awkward in groups and maladroit at small talk? Who has to be dragged to parties and then needs the rest of the day to recuperate? Who growls or scowls or grunts or winces when accosted with pleasantries by people who are just trying to be nice? . . . .
If you answered yes to these questions, chances are that you have an introvert on your hands . . . .
[A]fter an hour or two of being socially "on," we introverts need to turn off and recharge. My own formula is roughly two hours alone for every hour of socializing. This isn't antisocial. It isn't a sign of depression. It does not call for medication. For introverts, to be alone with our thoughts is as restorative as sleeping, as nourishing as eating. Our motto: "I'm okay, you're okay—in small doses."
There are some allusions to sociopathic ways of being ("many actors, I've read, are introverts, and many introverts, when socializing, feel like actors"), although introverts deny being misanthropic. But do you know who has even more in common with introverts? Aspies. I thought this Aspie take on introversion was especially entertaining in light of recent events:
Admittedly, if you take enough abuse and feel slighted enough times by colleagues and peers, it is a challenge not to become cynical and misanthropic. I personally find I dislike trying to deal with people more each year. The majority of people might be okay, but it seems that one lousy person will find a way to abuse or insult me given the opportunity. Why would I want to deal with a large group knowing even one jerk is present? Unlike other people, I have a difficult time, a nearly impossible time, forgetting such abuse.
But I'm not shy. I'm not introverted. In fact, my problem is that I will try to defend myself when I perceive an attack. (I don't always perceive an attack, sadly, until it is too late to undo damage.) So, my "introversion" is really an attempt to avoid people and conflicts. It's not a desire to be alone because I like being alone, it is a desire to avoid being miserable later.
Many people with ASDs start to seem introverted because that's an easy way to cope with life. If I stay at home, there is less risk of sensory overload, emotional overload, or general social conflicts. Alone is safe. And, thankfully, I don't feel "lonely" or "isolated" -- when I feel "trapped" it is not because I want to be around people, but because I want out of the city.
Sure, I realize I was isolated from peers and colleagues. But my desire for connections was practical; I realize social connections do matter at school, in the workplace, and within organizations. Unfortunately, I lack the social skills to develop the relationships that might help my career(s).

  1. I can get peopled out, but there is context to that situation. Usually it involves me being presented to a bunch of new people through someone else, like a friend, co-worker, or lover. Having to explain who I am, what I do, where I'm from, what I like, blah blah blah, is all very irritating.

However, if I'm in a setting with complete strangers, or people I mostly know, I'm very extroverted and rarely if ever get peopled out. Usually it's the opposite, I thrive on the social stimulus.

As far as the acting thing goes... I can't speak for anyone but myself, but I almost always feel like I'm acting some sort of role. There's a true me underneath all my masks, but that man has no place in a civilized world. There's only a few people that have seen more than a glimpse.

  4. what a stupid article... how is this linked to sociopathy? it isn't, me just wrote some lousy paragraph trying to link it, me is probably a total loner trying to convince himself that he's a sociopath.

sociopaths aren't shy, sociopaths are extroverted

  5. I thinks that when you say; "sociopaths are X" you're always wrong. One of the major defining factors of sociopathy is it's diversity. Sociopaths could have almost any personality in the world, just with added (or substracted) characteristics.

What I do think is that there can be very little middleground with these characteristics. They can be extremely religious zealots and severe apatheists but still have the same 'disorder'.

So, in conclusion, I think that every defining character-trait you care to mention about sociopaths almost always has one thing in common: it's probably laying somewhere around one of the two extremes of it's respective spectrum.

I doubt that. That's the kind of theory zhawq preached and look how he turned out to be.

  7. The only way you can know you are a psychopath is to be diagnosed, any self diagnoses is invalid. The biggest pointer to psychopathy is a complete lack of empathy for others, but there are many more factors to it, such as pathological narcissism etc.

Even UKan, who displays all the characteristics of a psychopath, couldn't call himself one.

    ReplyDelete
  8. it's not possible for someone to display all the characteristics of a psychopath online, some of you people are so easily taken in.

  9. that's something else, if you actually think that you can tell if somebody is a sociopath from reading some comments they make on some blog, you're very stupid.

  14. Some things mentioned in this article are very familiar for me. As I mentioned here before I'm very introvert. Especially the 'reloading' sounds familiar, especially when I have to make small talk to people. My parents are very energy consuming people for me. They're extremely nice but also simple people, talking about many small things and events over and over again. +/- 48 hours with them is the maximum, then I get very nervous, tired and feel like running. After I've spend a day with them being alone is such a relief. I have that with all people that are quiet simple and mostly talk small talk.

Being an introvert, I am and never was shy. I'm direct and sure of myself when having interaction, I mostly get what I want and I'm never afraid or shy in interaction with people, on the contrary. I can enjoy having a good time with people, I especially like witty conversation and love it when I feel people find me witty, smart, funny and interesting. With my style and being articulated (for those who feel like vomiting now take a pill) I can be very charming. A lot of people love me 'at first'. As I said here on one of my first posts, I could tell people anything I want (that I'm an aristocrat, high rank politician ...), they would buy it, even intelligent people.

But as I also wrote before. Being alone, with myself, enjoying myself, is still the best time for me. I've never met better company untill now but myself (sure some more puking will be going on now).

    @Erin
I read your comment about praying to g'd and sticking the needle in this morning. I was on and of laughing like a crazy person in the bathroom cause I couldn't stop visualizing it.

  15. I'm a non-socio extrovert and I get sick of being around people too. It depends on the energy of the people (positive energy = I can go all night; negativity = want to be alone or change scenes).

    Lol. You hear that Zwang?

I don't get any of this. I don't need alone time. I surround myself with people and take control over them. I don't feel akward in social situations. It's more like I sometimes make other feel uncomfortable because I'm too uninhibited but I really don't give a shit. If I'm getting tired of dealing with somebody I don't slink off back home, I make it clear that they have to shape up or take the punishment. I don't think that there are any shy introverted sociopaths. Most sociopath out there have something about them that draws people in.

Makes sense to me David. You sound like you drink from the lead cup to fill the part bro. No offense or nothing dude.

  24. I thinks that when you say; "sociopaths are X" you're always wrong.

If that was the case why is there a pcl-r? I haven't read anywhere at all that introversion is consistent with psychopathy and I would be interested to know why M.E. thinks she is a psychopath considering she shows little signs of it.
Reguardless, I never cared since her forum has been a lot of fun fucking around with people and sociopaths end up here anyway from time to time. I've looked into introversion and sociopathy and the only time I've even seen anyone say it's possible are people with no degree in psychology. From what I read from actual doctors, introverts with some psychopathic traits are called a schizoid not psychopaths or sociopaths.
The whole supposed psychopath/sociopath debate that zWaq tried to talk about isn't about what he thinks it is, it is about whether some people are born with those traits(Psychopaths) or whether they picked up those traits because of their situations in life (Sociopath). It's a left field theory so it's not really worth talking about. It needs to be pointed out though that it is about how you ended up having such traits, not how severe or permanent they are. It certainly isn't something someone here would be able to determine as most people here can hardly differentiate between a narcissist and a psychopath let alone what the origin of their traits.
There are many people who come to this site who want to rebel against society because society has treated them like a deviant. It's easy to see the psychopath as your ally since the traits laid bare show someone society has no good will towards. However, outside this forum people like me blend right in and we are laughing at you deviants with the rest of the crowd.
I tell my neighbors and family I am a night club consultant and I have a pretty normal life from the outside looking in. However, if you are really observant and hang around long enough you will start seeing the other side of me. Where I control, bully, and manipulate. Where I lose control of my temper and get violent with people. Nobody, though, has been able to see that I live a double life. They buy every last line of bollocks that I hand them. I hide in plain site because nobody expects me. People are magnetised to me and not only believe the words I speak, but look up to me. The last thing they are thinking is that I go out every weekend committing crimes to live the good life I have now and fit in with this upper class society I just moved into.

Who's "us"? Do you think you speak for everyone on this blog here? Either way I have no need to convince anyone here, and certainly not you, I have a real life (no mather what you think of it) beside this blog should you forgot it. As you have the time to spot this blog all day every day I guess there's not much action going on in yours. You're making so much effort to try to act like the gang leader around here it makes you uninteresting and even a bit pathetic to me (I'm sure I'm not the only one).
I really don't care misanthrope, this place is just some fun from time to time the time it lasts (and I guess for many others, don't take it so serious kiddy). I don't know and don't need to know your age, but you sound like a youngster in some desperate need of power, I'm sure you can find it here, I have no problem with that, if you're happy than I am, but you should buy yourself a lolly pop and shut up from time to time. I'll be happy to pay some back.

Or is it something you must resign yourself to, in the lines of an infirmity?
    Thank you

    ReplyDelete
  29. I would choose it. I mean if we can just cherry pick I would remove my tendencies towards crime and violence. Those are the two things I have tried to change and they won't. I get angry when things or people don't go my way. I start losing control and boom. I would like to be able to control my verbal abuse and direct it better. I lose control and start saying things to my wife or others close to me that cut real deep and they don't forget them even though I calm down and tell them I didn't mean it.

  50. On the subject of introversion versus extraversion; last month I was home alone fir two weeks, so I invited friends and encouraged them to invite more friends. We would spend the day sleeping, going out and playing video games, and during the evening most of the friends' friends (who didn't stay every night) would come over and we'd play drinking games. It was the most fun I've ever had.

Anyway, I never really felt the need to withdraw myself or anything. It's not like I never got tired of them on occasion, but not faster than, say, being alone. I can understand that being around people can be tiring, but only if you let them be.

I dated a man who claimed he was a introvert, but I couldn't understand why. Then I remembered one of the first conversations I had with him . He was talking about underwear styles, and I said something like: "Um I uh .. I wouldn't know about tighty whities, sorry." It was only an awkward moment" He kind of turned red. I didn't mean to intimidate him in the least. This is a person I never considered an introvert, but he claimed it. He was so refreshingly open and funny, with a super wit, so I had a hard time believing him. BTW, this is a person who claims he is "empathy challenged"

  75. I am an introvert i can identify with sociopaths because i have many of the traits but i dont consider sociopaths to be neither introverts nor extroverts they may behave in similar ways but its obviously not the same
Socializing its not very hard for me whats hard is trying to identify with people to find a subject which we both might be interested since most people are total dumbfucks i just shut my mouth and play the figurant even if they talk about something that interests me most of the times i keep my mouth shut because their knowledge on the subject is usually inferior to mine or their ideas are just jesus fuck of course there are also people who i enjoy teaching things to
but even playing the figurant is tiring keeping the stupid smile making the effort to seem interested analysing the conversation and the person i dont even know why i do it good manners i guess
but if the person interests me i can make all kinds of small talk just to get to know that person that i eventually end up manipulating just because i lose interest after a while
sociopaths always manage to keep you interested no matter for how long you know them if they make the effort to seem interesting to you that is i try to understand them and explain morals in ways that a sociopath might understand (dont do this because its just not worth it too many down sides) but they are very hard to deal with and usually end up doing things that people dont like such as hurting their feelings its not that they dont notice it they just dont care and thats what lack of empathy is like
    so sociopaths =/= introverts

  76. I'll tell you a cutesy wootsy story, because I'm manic as the day is long.

One of my older sisters always tells this story to friends of hers, meeting me for the first time:

When I was just a toddler, my mother and father liked to torture us daily through starvation, and what ever other deprivation they saw fit... so when my mother would start on dinner, we'd be so hungry it was almost blinding.

My sister who is 4 yrs older than me, would sit in the kitchen begging for just one little bite. When that didn't work she'd start to pout, hoping that her sad face would gain sympathy with my mother. It wouldn't work.

One thing both my parents have always loved is singing, and playing instruments. They used to make the whole family sit in a circle and sing religious songs.

My sister says, I couldn't have been more than a year and a half old, so it would irritate her that somehow I had figured out before her, what the magic trick was...

I would march my lil toddler legs into the kitchen with a great big smile on my face, and start singing to my mommy about what it was I wanted to eat!
Worked like a charm EVERY time!
I got the bite my sister was begging for, because I knew how to play my mother.

Some personality traits just can't be taught, Erin. Not as a second nature anyway. Not at the age you already are.

The traits you want so badly to adopt, come to me instinctively.
You might want to face the fact that at this point you are everything you're ever going to be.

    ReplyDelete
  77. The point is the fact that you are trying to sell us on this refined life is a fucking joke unless you live in pakistan. I'm not impressed by the pittance you make whoring yourself.

    ReplyDelete
  78. @Ukan
Ok, I guess I get that.

Assuming that I understood you right, I would find it interesting how you cope with the fact when being caught you would have to go many many years to prison, is that worth it for you? I guess it's not really important where you live as they are very severe everywhere in the world on it. For me liberty is the most important, I guess that's the case for most people (socio or not), and probably also for you?

With what you do I don't doubt a lot of money is to be made (I don't know anything about it and I personally wouldn't want to take the risk going into that business, not ashamed to admitt that), much more money then I make/made and in a much easier way. But in some way you must always feel chased and constantly watch your back (?), as the business you do is high priority to catch in most countries.

Sometimes people have to remind me I'm doing somethig illegal because I get so caught up in my role of being legitimate that I start forgetting what I do for a living in reality. This to me is normal and it makes me feel comfortable. Just like whoring yourself I'm sure has become normal for you.
My theory is that since I lived with punishment over my head my whole life it has made me numb to consequences and since you have been used as a sex toy your whole life younare not revolted by it.

  85. I'm saying Erin, that my personality came better equipped to adjust what style of manipulation I used, to survive, or get what I wanted. My sisters went through the same shit I did... but they're personality types had them playing, "Please feel sorry for me", in order to survive. And you know what? They are still using that tired number, after all these years.

What the fuck are they trying to survive now eh?
Not my parents. That rein is over.

Who the fuck are you trying to survive Erin?

Yes... I Do seem like a straight shooter don't I? I'm not trying to survive anything anymore. I'm just living.

Stop acting like you don't have access to your feelings... that's total crap! You're just blinded by your hunger...

  89. I guess it's hard for most of you to let go the stereotype of the average whore, and if you would see me in person actually believe that someone looking, acting and talking like me could be a prostitute (I guess almost nobody would believe that I do what I do)

I know the type of whore you are David. I know a women who does dominatrix work. She used to tell me funny stories of men getting fucked up the arse while she pulled their noses and made them oink like a pig. I used to bring my friends over to listen to her stories and watch the disturbed look on their faces.
As a matter of fact I took a former business associate I was trying to groom a few years back to this dungeon club with her. She had this cheerleader costume on. As soon as we got there she ran off into the crowd so my friend and I started wandering around looking at the spectacle of this whole place. It was a mad house. People were tied to boards and being whipped for the amusement of the crowd. This one cunt was swinging on this swing tied to the ceiling over the crowd.
We went up this stairway and as soon as we came around the corner there was this girl with her cheerleader skirt hiked up and a dildo on under it, shoving this purple madness into this mans mouth like she was skull fucking him. She was calling him a bitch and a whore. My friend had enough. He was so appalled he wanted to leave. "This is a fucking tart club!" he said.
She didn't like to be called a whore either, but she was different. Her clients would clean her house for her and her backyard. They would bring her zones of grass to smoke. They worshipped her sick fucking existance, and I couldn't help but give her a pat on the back.
However, I also told her slowly that her lifestyle was ruining her and she slowly realized it. She subistituted sex with pure sadism. She didn't even have sex anymore. She hadn't for several years. It was so asexual at her house I would bring women over that were sex fiends when I was trying to make porn and they would immediately go celebate. We had a joke that her house was cursed. I called her recently and she quit her life of being a dom and got a boyfriend. She is a lot happier.

I know, they don't have that luxury, and profiling is much more efficient than taking night cream of 70y old ladies. I know a lot about El Al security, they are the best, I think there's no other airline in the world with an anti SA missile defence. But their questioning can be really hard, although in the end they're always friendly. I'm already back home, I was in Eilat for only 4 days.

I personally don't know what all this talk about "recharging" is... I thought that's what sleeping was for. Wearing a mask comes naturally, it shouldn't be overly tiring for anyone really... unless you're bad at it. I think in the case of you socio/psycho types they are neither truly extroverted or introverted. The ones who seem extroverted couldn't possibly be genuinely so, as you said, Ukan, only a few people have even caught a glimpse of your real self. In my mind, calling someone like that an extrovert wouldn't be a precise description. The ones who seem introverted are either being lazy or don't need anyone for anything at the moment. I think this can change back and forth. Who says you can use typical personality terms to describe personality disordered folk? I thought the post was sort of interesting anyway.

  131. I dont think its introversion in its true sense.
Im more inclined to think that its actually disdain of most people and the clever socio lets it be 'seen' as introversion.
Personally , if I find the conversation trite or boring and just simply cant be bothered with it, disdain comes roaring out and for me the conversations over unless something REALLY piques my interest. Putting out the vibe of being 'shy' is an easy way to explain away indifference and disdain.

    ReplyDelete
  147. @Lycan

I don't think there would be many differences. When I get really bored, I start getting restless. Pacing back and forth, opening drawers, looking behind stuff; mostlt trying to find something to do. After a while, taking risks seems a lot more attractive than it usually does, and when I'm bored even longer, getting caught starts mattering less and less. I've vandalized stuff and stolen things from friends and relatives, just to stop being bored; if only for a minute.

A little bored, and I get tired. Yawning, stretching, getting distracted... Now that I think about it, I do that a lot...

Anyway, when my boredom is caused by one (or more) particular person, I start being an asshole. Just for revenge and fun. And I know: 'fun' is redundant.
