Well, he was right (a while later valued theory) and then eventually (give enough time and conditions change, the theory is not so valid anymore, look at USA) wrong again. Economics and relationships work similarly. It is unrealistic to think people do not reconcile their give and take the same way they balance their philanthropic give and take.

ReplyDeleteI have a friend who's always counting the deeds she and her spouse exchange. It can be nauseating because I don't think he does this.
This is not discussed. She is normal, not a psycho. She has a nonprofit job. -She places homeless people in jobs. She could have been an executive making tons of money.
She constantly talks to herself naming his good points so she can be satisfied choosing him.

Your friend does that to make sure she is not overly giving and that she is receiving so she won't suffer the burden of giving. When unchecked typically women end up giving too much. You have one smart friend, learn something. Men suck you up to no end. Just look at the socio-beeper relationships we've been talking about. A majority of Jane and Jo relationships is similar to a socio-beeper interaction at different degrees.

ReplyDeleteHmm. I think that makes a lot of sense, seeing as that's the way society has a tendency to function. Like women have natural maternal predispositions. I had an anthropology teacher saying that wasnt true, but socially enforced. I think the social predisposition builds off of the basic nature that perpetuates it. If it weren't true, it wouldn't be true. I think people have a natural desire to either excel, or to be complacent, and so society divides itself to the 80/20 rule naturally. So some people want to be better, some people don't. So throughout history we have the slaves, the working class, the monarchs, the barons, and the royal elite or politicians. I think the systems we have in place that allow people to choose which facet they want to be a part of makes more sense. Instead of being born into elitism. But generally, I don't think its possible for everyone o be great. Only the people who have a strong desire to be.
ReplyDeleteAs an evolutionist, eugenics does make sense to me in the sense of eradicating defective genes and illness for the benefit of our future society. Where I draw the lines to what I feel is okay and what I don't is where I struggle. Do I believe in racial supremacy, no. I wouldn't mind the thought of sterilization as a form of bettering society. People balk at the idea of trying to build a healthier and stronger society, but animals do this naturally.
ReplyDeleteBottom line, eugenics is like euthenasia(sp) One can find individual cases in which it makes sense, a lot of sense, even. However, man does not have the wisdom and moral development to orchestrate it. The slippery slope factor would make it untenable as an actual, workable, practical solution.
ReplyDeleteThe face of eugenics is changing with technology today. Scientists have created ways of genetically modifying children with desirable traits and choosing the gender. It will be interesting to watch how this will affect society.

@Sweetcheeks, I'm against eugenics for the very reasons you mentioned. Peoples genes have evolved to be specifically beneficial for the environment they were constructed from. It doesn't mean one is better than another. And the probably of developing or not breeding out malicious genetic traits is much higher and detrimental in a eugenics type program. It's not beneficial evolutionarily.
