Neurodiversity = asset

A lot has been written about neurodiversity and how unfair it is to treat poorly people who fall out of the mental norms.  Despite the push of the neurodiversity movement, things are still labeled with pejorative terms like "disorder" and "syndrome" and the focus has been on "treatment" and integration as if being neurodiverse is equivalent to being handicapped.  In Wall Street Journal article titled "The Upside of Autism," Jonah Lehrer makes a contrary case:

Because of these obvious shortcomings—humans are supposed to be social animals, after all—most people regard autism as a disease, a straightforward example of an impaired mind. But there's compelling evidence that autism is not merely a list of deficits. Rather, it represents an alternate way of making sense of the world, a cognitive difference that, in many instances, comes with unexpected benefits.

That's the lesson, at least, of a new study from the lab of Nilli Lavie at University College London. A few dozen adults, both with and without autism, were given a difficult perceptual task, in which they had to keep track of letters quickly flashed on a computer screen. At the same time, they also had to watch out for a small gray shape that occasionally appeared on the edge of the monitor.

When only a few letters appeared on the screen, both autistic and normal subjects could handle the task. However, when the number of letters was increased, subjects without autism—so-called neurotypicals—could no longer keep up. They were overwhelmed by the surplus of information.

Those adults with autism didn't have this problem. Even when the task became maddeningly difficult, their performance never flagged.

What explains this result? According to the scientists, autism confers a perceptual edge, allowing people with the disorder to process more information in a short amount of time. While scientists have long assumed that autistics are more vulnerable to distraction—an errant sound or conversation can steal their attention—that's not the case. As Prof. Lavie notes, "Our research suggests autism does not involve a distractibility deficit but rather an information-processing advantage."

These perceptual perks have real-world benefits. The scientists argue, for instance, that the ability to process vast amounts of data helps to explain the prevalence of savant-like talents among autistic subjects. Some savants perform difficult mathematical calculations in their head, others draw exquisitely detailed pictures at a young age. These skills have long remained a mystery, but they appear to be rooted in a distinct cognitive style shared by all autistics. Because they can process details that elude the rest of us, they can perform tasks that seem impossible, at least for the normal mind.
***
The larger lesson is that, according to the latest research, these "deficits" are actually trade-offs. What seems, at first glance, like a straightforward liability turns out to be a complex mixture of blessings and burdens.

Of course you would never see an article in the Wall Street Journal titled "The Upside of Sociopathy" and for that it's a little hard for me to take the neurodiversity movement seriously.  But I like this idea of one sense being gone so your other senses fill the gap.  It reminds me of this classic tale of blindness and talent...  you're welcome!

  3. We are better than the empathys. They can't get anything done. With all other factor equal we make better surgeon, judges, leaders, soldiers, firefighters, businessman, scientists etc. I like pity as much as the next guy. But the fact is we are not the broken ones. We are better, more evolved. One day we will use neuroscience to determine job placement and guess who would be on top?

So, you feel that you are better than empaths - hmmm. Then
why do you always have this need to WIN? It's because you
are loosers already and you can't tolerate another loss. I,
too, think empaths needs major psycotherapy but the moderate
functioning sociopaths I have been around are EVIL and I know
that is the case for high functioning sociopaths, too.

    1. Winning is for the purpose of winning. But losing is important too because it weeds out the ones with weak willpower. A scios can loss without any shame and try again, where as an empathy takes it personally. This is actually one of the mean reasons why i think empathies are useless. Each time we have a recession the market weeds out the weak one and stupid ones, and the card shuffles. The empathies are too weak to accept the risks in Jan 2009 and missed a once a life time profit opportunity. When the risk/reward balance is decreased like now, a bunch of empathies enter the market but its already too late. Life is very much the same.

If your attempting to suggest that normals or empaths
do not pick themselves up after a loss and try, again, your lying and that is the root of your argument. And, wherever there is a lie - there is
      evil.

    3. Because it's healthy to make winners of everyone these days. They are doing that in schools... no losers, no running up sports scores.... so as to not offend the losing team. Everyone MUST be the same!

We don't need little fucking pansys running around expecting everything to be handed to them all their life like their parents did. That is how you create a spoiled brat narc.

    4. If one wants to win, it means that that person is E-V-I-L, ha ha.

      Win > Loose

      Win = Benefit

By winning you can get: prize, power, pleasure and so on. Actually I think that all, even emphatic people always want to win :/
Also socios can tolerate loss easier when emphats, I think. Socios and regulars, both have their pros and cons.

You want to know what is evil? Empathy is evil. Think of every evil action in history, genocides witch burning etc. Who carried out these killings? Mostly normal people. A socio will never be stupid enough to buy into these irrational propaganda, but empathies will. Imagine a world with just sociopaths, Hitler wouldn't have been able to do shit, because he is just one person. It was only with empathies was genocides possible. The greatest lie in history is altruism, but you can only have altruism is you have empathy. Without empathy who would give up their time to kill someone he does not know for some guy who calls him self leader? The root of all evil is altruism and the bases for that is empathy.

      Delete
    6. I disagree, every evil action done in our history was
committed by evil people from all different types of
personalities. But all the good that has been done
in our world has came from those that had great amounts of empathy and I will use Mother Theresa as
an example. She left wealth behind to help the poorest of poor and her sacrifice will live on thru
the ages, unlike, hitler and those that do evil, as
their deeds will be remembered with horror.

    7. @9:43

^Furthermore, hitler's rule happened because the
people of Germany were starving when he came to power
and he continued in his power due to very evil psychopaths.

    11. Couldn't agree more, Elicious. That stupid bitch Teresa condemned the use of contraception, which lead to a hell of a lot more unwanted pregnancies, diseases, and overall misery for those poor people she claimed to love. Also, I just love the hypocrisy of her denouncing divorce even in cases of severe spousal abuse, but supporting her butt buddy Diana when she got divorced.
And this is just the tip of the iceberg of bullshit she spouted. Christopher Hitchens wrote a brilliant book about her 'The Missionary Position' in which he exposes her corruption and lying.
This is who the empaths continue to bring up every time they want to show a person of virtue and honour... good choice.

    12. I think what we have here is that Sociopaths and Empaths are two sides of the same dualistic coin. Both can be harmful. A healthy balance of emotions and non-attachment can do so much good. These balanced people make good doctors and EMTs. An emotional Empath could really never make it seeing all that suffering and gore. Yet a Sociopath isn't understanding and compassionate to relate to a patient. I'm kind of in the middle. I'm actually on this page because I'm an Aspie. I have had out of control emotions in my life, but I am much more detached now that I'm older. I've adapted.

    7. And by the time a self aware sociopath heals from abuse, provided you meet one who will admit it, does he/she have empathy, or more empathy than before? Or is it simply just more consideration for others. what does it mean?

I am borderline and I'm pretty sure I like to win at other's expense but these are not heavy things where people feel conned. They only feel duped maybe because I have easy time disengaging because my reasoning skills outweigh my emotional needs. When I become flat with them in the end or in the middle they are confused.

There is sociopathy here, and I am um ..healing? Idk what I am doing.I am purging feeling sorry for myself in my head in private. I am detoxing from my childhood? I don't know if I am going to end up caring more about others.. It feel like I'm just feeling beter about myself and NOT CARING as much about the way I come across.

I feel cold spot with pockets of warm here and there. It is morphing all the time. I function very well. I am not sure how I am going to turn out, and I don't necessarily believe I am going to sew up old wounds. They are wounds of the mind and soul.

I have been damaged. I cannot show this around to people and say hey look this is why I don't care about you. Look, see? Damaged :) <> only to spit them out when I feel like winning for no other reason but I'd just like to prove to the I'm right about something and 'don't try to get one over on me or I will push you over to the curb till you do what I demand'

    21. Look at how many people you see who were abused grow up to become social workers or therapists, to help others who have shared their experience.

Or the teen drug addict who chooses a low paying career as an addictions speciliast when she's all GROWED up.

These people are so attatched to their experiences that they become their identities,

I think sociopaths do lack that aspect of being human. Totally organic though, IMO.

I have a lot of these traits, I've never had a solid identity and most often I choose what immediately benefits me, because...why wouldn't I?

It is a powerful feeling, especially if they are a bit closed off. And it feels warm. But then there is the little nudge in me that says get the fuck out of there. It is the borderline suffocation, or the fear of what happens now -I got to listen to this person and love on this person now for how long? Why is it that when they feel close to me I feel a responsibility to live up to something? Because it did't ever matter in the past whether a perso feels close. The will still be a shithead eventually. it is he being of the end. That is a painful phenomenon I will need to change and do not take pride in it. It sucks. I come from a long line of women who analyze everything to death. It's like their so obsessed with themselves, that daily; they are talking about what's going on inside their heads, and trying to figure out why.

I just let the shit in my head have its own life. I have a basic idea of why I do the things I do, and that's satisfying. I'm not looking to define myself.

It's really a wonder I stick around here, actually. I have a lot of fun here, but people are so obsessed with identity. Obsessed with the meaning of everything. I like to take a piss on all of it every now and then. Some things are made more complicated through analysis than they really are. Know what I mean?

    9. I think I do.

I am not glad or sad for being a sociopath, caring wouldn't change anything. But it's interesting that I am a socio, I, not some other guy, that is what I was trying to tell :)

I don't care what's in my head, but I like to analyze things. I prefer analyzing others, because there's not much to analyze about me, I just like to keep my brain busy.

I like to be here too. Well you should consider, that not all people, even sociopaths are as smart as you :)
Do you remember what you felt when you realised that you are a sociopath? Probably doubt. So they aren't sure too, but they can't find the answer themselves. When I found this one, I was amused. I couldn't believe a sociopath would actually be writing a blog about being a sociopath.

I stepped in for a few blogs, but found it to be rather stuffy in the comments section. Got bored and left. That was in '09. Then I peeked back in last summer, and have been here since. The place gets more rowdy than what I saw back in '09. It has a more diverse following, as well.

  17. If sociopaths held up to the myth of being calculating, rational, and logical, people would love them, and they would be a major benefit to society. Unfortunately they are impulsive, prone to rage, self-deceived, short sighted, and constantly claiming they are what they aren't (inconsistencies with words and behavior.) I pity sociopaths because they lack capacity to see how they really are. You guys are dysfunctional by your OWN standards. Fuck empathy and neurotypicals, they are just as fucked up as you are, this isn't a case for that. The problem with sociopaths is that they lie and say they are these highly functional and advanced creatures, and empaths just don't get it. Sociopaths are always taking short cuts that cause problems and refusing to own up to it. I could give a fuck less about the lack of empathy, its all the immature child games they play, the constant need to be better than others and the stupid "ruining" people. What's so logical about that? Why is it rational to ruin other people and cause them harm? If I could change sociopaths I wouldn't care about the empathy, I think the rage and the impulsivity are more problematic, also the self-delusion and lack of self-awareness, you guys are almost as oblivious as simple narcissists, hence you can never really see or understand your shortcomings- which prevent YOU from achieving YOUR goals. Sociopaths screw things up for themselves and blame others, I can't believe how immature they are, I just wish they could see it from a schizoids perspective, I share many quirks with sociopaths, being an outsider, I almost feel a ghostly camaraderie with them, until reality slaps me with a reminder that they are nothing but butthurt children in adult suits, with no legitimate reason to be all bent out of shape. "He hit me!" one says, "Yes but Johnny, you hit him twice before he struck you once! You have no reason to complain, its your own fault." I honestly can't believe how blind you all are in your lack of comprehension as to why people don't like you, as if everyone is just making it all up and its an unprovoked conspiracy against the sociopaths (who have been conspiring against everyone else since day one.)

-Honestly, don't you have anything better to do? I could be like you guys, I could play games with people, but I'm not as pathetic and empty so instead I spend my time developing useful skills and learning pragmatic things. If sociopaths were really logical and rational and simply lacked empathy, they would be amazing and autonomous, they would accomplish so many things all on their own. Instead, they are lazy screw ups who can't take care of themselves so they live parasitic lifestyles. If you are so smart and you don't like people, why don't you use your skills to become independent and autonomous? If you all hate empaths so much why do you spend so much time around them? I don't even hate empaths/neurotypicals but I don't waste my time with them because they are uninteresting and most of them have nothing of any real value to offer me. Seriously, think about it, think about how you really are. I don't blame sociopaths for the worlds problems, I blame neurotypicals because they go along with it and even ask for it. I'm not a socio-hater, I'm not butthurt (love that term) over some sociopathic trauma, I just pity you all enough to offer a gesture of truth and insight into your condition from a schizoidal (detached, yet connected) perspective. Empaths act like empaths, because they are empaths.

Definitely not the insecure and shameful narcissist constantly compensating for his deficiencies with boasting, more of a tacit feeling of earned entitlement due to all my solitary studies and undertakings, I don't brag because I have nothing to prove to anyone, I only have faith in myself that I can achieve what I put my mind to. None of you really care though, do you? Are sociopaths really interested in psychology- or anything else for that matter, or is everything about quenching boredom and information that can be used for exploitation? Talk about boring.

Now, that was a post I could agree with! Thanks!

    3. Mr Schizoid, you seem to really like being externally defined. Instead of using your own words, you are defining yourself by the official symptoms of a schizoid. You describe a disorder, not yourself.

Did the schizoid self-diagnosis make you feel better about yourself? I bet it did. I bet it was recent, too.

    4. But let me start by saying...
      I love you

    5. 417, I thought he described himself quite well but
why would you think is definition was recent?

And when did sp start reading minds?

    6. 4:40, I wish I knew what, if any term there is to specifically refer to what 4:17 is doing. Its just another sociopath game, trying to poke at a presumed psychological weakness in order to invoke some sort of negative response. Its a form of bullying, its one of those "ruining people" things malignant people do. Not something one should take seriously or give credit to in regards to the accuracy, psychopaths aren't as adept as determining another person's psychology as they think, they make a lot of assumptions and focus mostly on what weaknesses they think the person SHOULD have or what ones they want them to have (what weakness would be convenient and serve their purpose?). They can see the obvious problems but obviously a lack of empathy is not going to leave a person well equipped to determine what others are thinking or feeling, its one of those shallow "skills" that they try to dress up as if its something impressive. I seriously doubt a schizoid cares what sociopaths think as they tend to focus not on what is said, but how and why, hence they are unamused by shallow things. Watch schizopolis and you'll see what I mean. "Generic greeting" "Generic greeting returned" in this case its "Malignant attempt at psychological attack based on faulty premise" "Emotional apathy with intellectual analyzation as response"

These perceptual perks have real-world benefits. The scientists argue, for instance, that the ability to process vast amounts of data helps to explain the prevalence of savant-like talents among autistic subjects.

perks don't help you learn to do new things, cope with changes, fit in socially, or manage emotions. with respect to adapting to both internal and external environments, the sociopaths and aspies seem miles apart.

  23. I can't help but laugh and pity all these sociopaths criticizing empaths. You guys know you're just confirming the view that you're all mentally screwed up, right? Then you try to make us feel guilty. Nope, that's part of your power play. Anything you say in your defense means nothing. It's fake.

  24. I'm an Aspie and I believe the Neurodiversity movement is for EVERYONE. Sociopaths are most definitely included. :)
