Almost a psychopath

From illustrious reader Daniel Birdick, regarding the book Almost a Psychopath: Do I (or does someone you know) have a problem with manipulation or lack of empathy?, in which people are apparently psychopathic without necessarily rising to the level of diagnosis:

I skimmed through the the Almost a Psychopath book. They adhere to the Hare definition of psychopathy and then label the "almost psychopath" as someone who behaves like a diagnosed psychopath, only less so. Very scientifically precise, no?~
This spectrum issue reminds me of the 2nd James Fallon video from one of your recent posts. Here this guy is, with the DNA and the brain of a serial killer, yet instead of becoming a murderer he instead becomes a neuroscientist. He is clueless about the impact of his own behavior on others up until the point when he sees the results of the brain scans, although his family is completely unsurprised by his discoveries. So, by virtue of his utter lack of caring and his genetic and neurological makeup, can we call him an almost psychopath? Or does the absence of antisocial or criminal behavior (relative to diagnosed psychopaths) indicate that he is not at psychopath at all, in any way that matters? Some, like good old Dr. Robert, base their notions of psychopathy entirely on what does or does not happen on the inside. The Hare checklist on the other hand is behaviorally based, with a few exceptions. I think the checklist assumes, to paraphrase the ultimate paragon of passivity, that you shall know a tree by its fruits. What you experience on the inside only matters when it expresses itself on the outside. I am inclined to agree. What you do matters more than what you don't feel. So what if you feel callous and unemotional on the inside. What matters is how you actually treat people. Right? Why then all the blather about empathy and emotional responses to social faux pas, like guilt and shame? Is it the whole authenticity thing? I find that to be another red herring. What self are we being authentic about? Where is this ghost in the machine and why won't it show up on a PET scan? Is it really "virtuous", whatever the hell that means, to be honest and admit that you don't give a flying fuck about whatever sob story some clueless twat wants to lay on you, or is it in fact more moral to pretend to care by aping the right facial expressions and body language?
Went on a bit of a rant there. Anyway...

  1. I find this conversation both intellectually stimulating and banal. Things are or they are not. Applying morality to anything is upsetting and unnecessary. Who cares if someone is moral? They made their choice how to move forward.

When a move is made a counter move is produced. Morality is just on the periphery of my perception, something I remember but know is useless. If I choose to kill, either I go to jail or I've covered all of my bases and I don't even get arrested. Only the weak or slain worry about what society approves of. I am society.

I only have use for notions I can swing into the skulls of those in front of me. Like power and intellect.

  2. I vote honesty is more morally appropriate than feigning sympathy to encourage bad behavior or negatively reinforcing destructive behavior.

    1. That's only relevant for your psychopath of a husband. For normal people though, honesty is only appropriate if it lines up with your agenda or you're too tired to feign what you should. Something that happens to me a lot. I find it easier to just avoid people who would want those kind of things from me than to actually give it to them. Empaths are so needy and they don't even know it.

Everyone does. Otherwise, why would time exist? People gotta have something to do.

I'm here because the things discussed here give me satisfaction.

And why? It satisfies what? The verb "to satisfy" requires an object, implied or explicit.

I'm here because the minds here cannot be found anywhere else.

If my reasons don't satisfy you then that's your cross to bear. The most satisfying justifications for myself, for why I'm her is this: I'm here because I want to be and I'm not not here because I don't want to be. That's all there is to it.

And why? It satisfies what? The verb "to satisfy" requires an object, implied or explicit.

It's okay that you want to know this. Everyone and everything here is an object. Reality is an object. So 'to satisfy' makes sense in my reality. I can satisfy myself if I do something with less conscious effort than the pleasure it affords me.

And what proof do you have of this. You just said you prefer to avoid people, so how would you know?

I don't need proof. You need proof. I don't avoid people. I fail to seek them out. I have been passively looking though. Today, at this pinpoint in time, my knowledge of the world and the architecture of the internet tells me that this is the place I want to be.

      Thanks for the tip, Mɵᴅʊsa.

  6. In general, low-empathy people (e.g. psychopaths) are inclined to downplay issues of intent, feeling, etc. and hence are inherently likely to argue, "it is what I do that matters, not what I think as I do it."

Normal people don't think that way. In fact, when they hear you arguing that, they think you sound nuts. It would be a bit like a blind guy saying, "well, I drive my car OK. I haven't hit anyone yet, because I've managed to compensate for my lack of sight."

Big issue with psychopaths: if they get stressed, they may stop trying to reign things in. At that point, all hell can break loose.

E.g. put me under enough stress and I'll do very bad things. Where normal people freeze up, I'm likely to get creative, impulsive and thoroughly antisocial.

There are two groups of people in the world: the one-eyed men, and the blind.

Which one would you rather be?

put me under enough stress and I'll do very bad things. Where normal people freeze up, I'm likely to get creative, impulsive and thoroughly antisocial.

That doesn't much sound like you are "downplaying issues of intent, feeling, etc." at all.

That can be a scary thing. His reasoning is sound to me. Who cares what happens in the future if it hasn't happened yet. At least that's his reasoning which I can't argue with.

Absolutely. I find I do absolutely sociopathic things when pressured. I've always seen it as a weakness. A compensation for not being able to think up effective empathic ways to respond.

I once beat my 'friend' with a wooden sword scabbard for messing with my mouth in my sleep. I wasn't sure what he had done but I knew some of the things I might have done and I was incensed. It was an effective reaction. As it turns out he hadn't done anything at all and I had more or less imagined the whole thing. Such is life I guess.

  9. People are afraid of things they don't understand and things that are different from them.

Being different and not being able to explain this difference invokes fear in them. They then resort to implementing the only solution their tiny minds are capable of, eliminating the different which will then logically cause their fear to disappear.

It's ironic isn't it? In a world where people try to sell the idea of acceptance of an individual, they only practice it when it benefits them.

  10. Someone from the neighborhoodAugust 7, 2012 at 5:33 AM

One possible problem with diagnosing based on behavior only: Say someone gets diagnosed with psychopathy because of their crimes during the years between age 18 and 30, but then they change their behavior and manage to quit antisocial behavior altogether. They may even become a loving husband (or wife) and be great with kids.

Are they still psychopaths or should they have their diagnosis recanted?

If yes, the diagnosis would more or less take on the meaning that 'criminal' and 'antisocial' already has, it will become a needless notion altogether.

    2. You're slightly misinformed. We're not all compulsive in how we behave. A lot has to do with circumstance and opportunity as well. Personally I've done a variety of crimes I don't intend to repeat ever again. There isn't any reason why I would either, since I did what I did out of curiosity and as experimental pass time.

An example: I raped twice before I hit 20 and haven't done it since. I'm now in my late thirties and haven't even felt tempted to repeat it.

    4. Yeah, I relate to this. I used to be a killer and a rapist as well. I used to eat humans and cut their heads off, and play football with them. I used to take somebody's eyes off and play ping pong with it, but now I'm doing fine, I'm a loving boyfriend and I don't misbehave anymore.

    5. Studies have shown ASPD to subside as a person matures into middle age and beyond. Unsure if this is because individuals start to develop a sense of empathy or their impulse control issues manifest differently with age.

      Delete
    6. The psychopathy diagnosis was created as a basis for normal people trying to understand a certain kind of people. There's more to this than the crimes we do or the whole idea would never have come into existence in the first place.

I understand what Birdick means when he suggests we focus on behavior only and forget about the 'inner life' of people like us, and sure, that would most likely work - if you're a psychopath. Viewed from the inside there's no mystery, nothing to understand, but that's no how normal non-psychopathic people think. To them the feelings are of supreme import, believe it or not.

To take out the attempt to measure our inner life when dealing out psychopathy diagnoses would also take away it's meaningfulness to the normal majority it was made for.

      Delete
    7. Rape twice, but never again, and somehow that is sufficient to ameliorate lacking a conscience? That is a shoddy example.

Because anyone was rapey or murderous at a point in their life and then they decided they got over the urge, their behavior should be forgotten? Fuck, that person could have had a revelation during or after that last exploit that caused them to reconsider future episodes. That rapist could have newfound fear.

If we use the circumstance and opportunity presents itself reasoning, and somehow whatever risk is taken out of the mind of the recidivist, sure she would offend again. Until a repeat offense she has a conscience? Hell no.

      Delete
    8. Someone is 100% correct.

The psychopathy diagnosis was created as a basis for normal people trying to understand a certain kind of people.

The terms 'psychopath' and 'sociopath' were created for the non-psychopaths and non-sociopaths. The words are merely shorthand for describing someone else's external manifestation. They have no value to a sociopath or a psychopath, except as a series of letters in a line.

      Hence...

To take out the attempt to measure our inner life when dealing out psychopathy diagnoses would also take away it's meaningfulness to the normal majority it was made for.

Indeed it is. We are allowed enough rope to virtually hang ourselves. It's one of the beauties of this place. But it can't, and doesn't, work if it is clung to in an attempt to avoid reproach or responsibility. That would negate the capacity for positive benefit, don't you think?

How can you grow and face yourself if you're clinging to a screen you hide behind. A hiding place only you think keeps you hidden. That's why everyone who has been here for a while calls you on it. It is one of your most glaring delusions.

Ellicit, just saw this, and it explains perfectly why I'm in such religious opposition to anonymous posting. You can't grow if you don't accept your image.
