Famous narcissist? Mary Roach

A friend sent me this. Obviously it's hilarious, but it's also a really good example of what if feels like watching a narcissist at work (to all of your narcissist readers that this blog apparently attracts?). There's something so blatantly ridiculous about the way they act and how disconnected they are from reality.

Mary is absolutely immune to criticism and when confronted with the truth about her singing, she immediately assumes that her critic has a personal issue with her that is driving the criticism as opposed to merely stating the obvious truth. One of the more obvious narcissist qualities is that when the judges start playing with her, she doesn't fight it or immediately defend herself but plays along. She wants it to seem like she is in on any joke that they might be having and even if the joke is at her expense she would rather have the attention (even negative) than cede the spotlight. When they give her the goodbye, she keeps the conversation going, although it means rehashing their worst criticism of her. She also feels compelled to turn the tables and judge them for their appearances, as being smaller, thinner, prettier, and "hot." She doesn't need to criticize them necessarily -- it is enough that they seem interested in her assessment of them. Of course they did not ask her for her opinions on them, but she manages to misunderstand a direct question and act as if she has some unique vision that warrants sharing.

It's so funny to watch this because I know someone who acts exactly this way, even down to the little awkward mannerisms, especially the shrug at 4:50. The world is just not ready enough to appreciate their talents, but ain't no thing. These people can't be kept down for long by haters.

    1. Re: factoid... Maybe I should try it, just once. I'm curious as to whether it might unleash a flood of emotions on a deeper level than I've ever experienced them.

Then again, I've seen people on that crap at raves. I've always found their collective back rubs and "positive energy circles" to be ridiculous.

Have you ever taken it, MP? If so, how did you react to it?

    2. @ Alterego

The quality these days varies so much that I don’t bother with it much anymore. Equally with most drugs in England. The weed or ketamine or whatever is either so weak as you’d be better off sniffing your gym shoes for a high before going out or disproportionately strong as to make you some dribbling catatonic bedlamite.

That said, I’ve had some great times on drugs. The positives tend to out-weigh out the negatives if you don’t go ape-shit on them.

I recommend reading Jon Ronson’s book, “The Psychopath Test” that had a chapter or two about a do-gooding psychiatrist that thought by prescribing ecstasy to sociopath’s he could alleviate their more extreme anti-social behaviours.

      Delete
    3. So what response to the Love drug did they have?

      Delete
    4. It all ended in tears before bedtime. Admittedly, these were hardened recidivist criminal sociopaths that the psychiatrist was trying to reform. The study was eventually shut down as it transpired that everyone, including the psychiatrist and the assistant researchers were all just indulging in drugged out ecstasy sessions that the sociopaths were just going through the motions, pretending that they were gaining from the experiences.

But there were some other darker experiences that I can’t quite recall exactly from the book (as it was lent to me) so please don’t quote me on it (and also, I've just returned from an after-work drinking session) – but some of the sociopaths had quite a different reaction to the drug and got severely mentally damaged. I recall something about one test subject wanting to remain in an isolated basement and smearing shit all over themselves constantly.

    2. LOL! I've never been a fan of her music; I am partial to rock and blues.

Imo, Gaga is a walking poster child for HPD (histrionic personality disorder), but at least she is not afraid to take risks for fear of looking ridiculous, or being ostracized. I respect that in a person.

It takes a measure of courage to reach her caliber of outrageous.

Judging their appearances whilst sporting a camel toe, storming out defiantly declaring she will not cry, then tearing up for the camera, the finale.. all hilarious.
The sound of two cats fighting or a dental drill is more appealing than her voice. I heard no such thing as her hitting the right note, and if she did, it was surely an accident.

    13. I took E nearly every weekend for 2 years when i was younger. In that time I forgot about the need to manipulate everyone I came across, started volunteering for charities, fell in love with a girl (or so I believe lol), and took up rescuing abused animals. I would work all week on my little projects, then roll on the weekends and party my ass off. Then it became so that MDMA was no longer an ingredient found in it where I live, and people started selling smack tabs with a pinch of coke. Sometimes just good ol' mescaline, which I would never complain about. Anyway, at that point I got out of it. Over the next 2 or 3 years, I lost the love of being around other people, got bored with charity and turned back into a hardass. Took up playing the game with people again just to pass the time and learned how to make my masks and polish them even prettier than before.

  9. I'm curious what the different reactions to watching this tape mean.

When I watched it I felt extreme discomfort and sadness for her. I am not sure if that's compassion, sympathy, or empathy, or specifically cognitive empathy, or projection. She was saying she did not care but I could see her care, I could see her masking and fighting to stay alive. It was such a relief to see her departure. I felt mostly relieved because I am not related to her and that I am not responsible for helping her.

  12. humm.. It has some narcisistics elements in her, but you can say that to almost everyone (mayb very low IQ people are exception??). Like now, when everbody in this page feels "superior" to her or how the video exploits her weirdness. But you can find this kind of behaviour in schizophrenics, bipolars and even "normal" people .. Or even a sociopath. Yeah, that's true. There a lot of people that you can label it as sociopath and at same time have totally deluded ideas. I have met pretty dumbs actually, but of course it's not about how ridiculous or how intelligent they're. It's not that hard to find one, try to go to a prision and talk. What your text is doing is actually worse than any scientific document (argh), just over-simplyfying and stereotyping, one dimensional view of someone. Instead of viewing her in components: her past, her relationships, medications, etc..There are co-morbidity too. There are things in her that any "Doctor" could ever imagine.. Or maybe, we all are just a bunch of "nothing". But I certain that exists more things than a "TV-show" can show to us or maybe, just look things that are stuck in between of a context.

A excellent text about narcissism and sorry my bad english (not may native language):

If you think of narcissism as grandiosity you miss the nuances, e.g. in her case the problem is narcissism without any grandiosity: she is so consumed with her identity (as not pretty) that she is not able to read, to empathize with, other people's feelings. She doesn't care to try because it conflicts with how she sees herself."

I had a bunch of different feelings when I watched. She was not a sheeple. I feel so inundated with sheeple, that I could scream.
She turned the power around, at one point, and made the panel feel uncomfortable, which was s great strength on her part. 99.999% of the people could not have done that. She owned them, at that small point.

She is different. She is way out, but any person who makes it to the top is unique, and is his own person. The sheeple stay huddled in a heap and criticize the ones who have the balls to put themselves out there.

I respect that she did that. Could she ever work on her voice and be good? I don't know. Maybe.

One wonders if Eden had such delusions also before settling as a 'successful' hair dresser... 26. I had the weirdest day. I called for an appointment for something and everything went totally the opposite of what I had requested and which was agreed on.

It was like a comedy of errors that I thought God must have a message for me. It turned out that I got the service free. The lady was so nice and so welcoming, but I could not relax because I felt guilty that I did not deserve the service free.

Well, I learned the lesson that I need to receive good things and feel I am worth it.

    2. Monica is here to stay... She is learning and she is collecting her own fan base. All she has to do afterwards is separate those who hate her from those who are undetermined.

I wish you were here more often. How have you been? Have you been good to yourself?

I read somewhere that BPD's core problem is fear of rejection. Any sense of rejection and they go into a rage. They also move between idealization and devaluation, back and forth. How typical are you in these regards? Do you agree? Do you have a sister who has already completely rejected you and took off from your life? I could learn so much from you, but I don't recall being open about family relationships. Maybe you were before I got here.

    3. :) If ANYBODY is worth it, you are Monica! You are a fantastic person!!!!!!!

      :) Enjoy yourself! Let loose!

I identify with Monica alot, maybe I have more Narcissistic traits than I think....... Or maybe empaths and narcissists make good friends? Iam not sure, but either way Monica is the ONLY reason I have stayed at SW, without you I'd be gone!!!!! But iam staying, for self discovery :)

    4. Rich, I am the one who is kicking your ass (with good intentions). So as you said above you failed at your promise. Your biggest problem as you may have realized at some level is your parents. There is such a thing as learned hopelessness. Your family has done that for you. This typically happens in the name of encouragement and understanding, pretty much everything Monica has said to you so far. Someone in your family (possibly mom) is like Monica.

What you heard early on (think up to 6) is how smart you are. They kept pumping you. Then eventually the school work conflicted with that pumping, and you never learned to move on w/o needing to be 'smart.' You stuck around people who kept calling you smart, you got stuck at home with your narcissistic family.

The only way out is ta you accept that it's ok to work hard at menial jobs. I am sure your family would not like this at all, but go ahead and do this. Learn the joy of ending a physically hard day, learn the joy of doing something for someone else. Once you break the cocoon of narcs you are in (someone was suggesting you go volunteer, fuck that thought, you learn how hard it is to make money at this step) you may actually get into a clarity that can define a passionate direction in your life. Like I said before, you are operating in a narrowing window. Get out of that home, and your nice-vampire momma who keeps building your ego and keeps her baby at home under her control.

    6. Hi Big Sis. I'm not incredibly sure who you are as I haven't been around as much lately. Did you have a different handle previously?

I've been doing relatively well. Extremely stressed out, but that's pretty standard. Coping better than usual, so that's positive.

Rejection is a big trigger, part of what I do is to break the stigma that our only reactions are to rage. It depends on whether a person with BPD is more prone to Acting In or Out, and the kind of rejection they're experiencing.

I do have a sister, but she's never rejected me. She used to be afraid of me, but she's not anymore. She's probably my best friend and the biggest support I have, we have, for each other. My family has stuck with me and we're all doing well in relationship to one another.

I don't talk much about my family here. There's not much point. I talk about them a lot on my blog if you feel like checking that out though.

    7. HTFU- Great post with great advice....... I just dont know what do to....... The only way I could get away is if I was homeless, plus my mother pays for my methadone treatment (and dosent want me off of it, she wants to keep me on methadone) how could I leave the house if all I have to look forward to is withdrawal from methadone and homelessness......

I assume you meant learned helplessness right? But it also is learned hopelessness, for me at least......

I have always been told I was extremely smart, but I dont think I am, I think I may be smarter than average, but I dont view myself as "smart" or an "intellectual". My mother told me I have been smart since I was a baby, she said when she would mtake me to the store and put me in the seat in the shopping cart, when we were don shopping I could and would point out every car and say the name/brand of it........ I have a very photographical memory, but probably just a little more than others.......

I feel stuck in a rut, and I know the only way out is myself, but its like I just cant take that step on my own, I have nothing but my family and without them id be homeless and in withdrawal, who would want to feel like that?

It sucks but you nailed it on the head, I have a narcissistic father. But we havent talked for 10 years and iam only 24.

    9. You are so right, bro. You have nothing, and you can't take any steps on your own, because you have a shitty attitude, and like dude said up there, you've had your mommy holding your hand, enabling you, controlling you. Does she also tell you she doesn't know what she'd do without you, bro? Dude, you're such a bummer. The only thing holding you back is that bad attitude of yours, and your mommy.
Oh yeah... and now you have Monica to help keep you down on her level. Pathetic.

On the up side, you take criticism very well, so you might be able to climb past Monica's level in no time. Keep listening to people who are bold. No more cry babies, and delusional mommy types, man. Ok?

  27. Big sister, I Think there was some very good info in the article, It's very difficult for anyone to understand my reality. Being misinformed is unfortunate because there is more involved here than what meets the eye or should I say ears. Half truths have been told.....on my end as well. Maybe it's time for the entire charade to drop. :(

    2. Be humble and willing to learn

    3. Know that assholes don't define you, but they give you a chance to learn to ignore. Ignoring is as valuable as gold, in the outside world, so embrace the lesson.

  32. The Mal Narcissist
The Mal Narc is an ugly distortion of a person. All PD's are a distortion of a person. All distortions are ugly. Let's face it.

The Mal Narc must be right, more "right" than anyone. If you are related to a Mal Narc, they must be more "right" than you. They will tell you what you feel, how you think and what you perceive.

They will tell you, not ask you. They feel entitled to take over you brain and body. If you the child of a Mal Narc, you were made to be there for them, in their minds.

You were made to be their mirror, as in the classic story of Narcissus. You best be their Echo or they will make you pay. They will make you pay good, for the crime of wanting to mirror yourself.

  33. Sometimes I think people take things much too seriously. Everything is cause for debate. Everything is cause for upset. But then again, why the hell not. It's fun to be contrary isn't it?

  34. I just watched the video, and read some of the feedback from SW. You guys, I can't believe you think this woman's only problem is narcissism!!!! She goes way beyond a personality disorder with this delivery, from start to finish. If you study her body language and watch her facial expressions, it's clear that she is not only an eccentric personality, but also that there is some mental illness there that, while can't be clear by just watching a 6 minute video, can at least be identified as being way off in her cognitive abilities. Perhaps she is pre-schizophrenia. It's possible to not show full symptoms until later in adulthood. Whatever the illness is, she is not very bright, and clearly mental!!!!
