DeleteI don't think that sociopaths are such bad people when they work alone.
ReplyDeleteIt's only when they team up with other sociopaths that I worry, because
then you get two bored people who decide to "paint the town red"- with red
blood.
When a sociopath/serial killer/ mass murderer is a lone wolf, he might
suceed in killing many people in a horrible incident(s) but that's not as
bad as multiple people working together.
Take Ted Bundy, his disarming nature and handsome looks helped him to get
close to his victims. He didn't need to go after hookers. He could go
after middle or upperclass "quality" women. He may have killed dozens,
but it could be said that if the women were attentive of thier surround-
ings and catious more could have escaped. One DID get away, and that's
how he was first caught. Jeffery Dahamer, the cannable killer also worked
alone. He killed about 15 under horrible circumstances. But because he
worked alone, he was limited in what he could do.
Mass murders usually work alone, except in the case of Columbine High
School and 9/11. One killer, like Charles Whitman in Texas killed about
15 from a bell tower in 1966. Most mass killings are sucide missions from
which the perpitraior doesn't expect to survive.
When two or more sociopaths work as a team, that's when you have REAL
atrocities. The cases are too numerious to go into here, but a few examples will suffice:
1) Conn. Home Invasion: Two ex-con's like the car driven by a DR.'s wife.
They think she must be wealthy. They plan to invade her home at 3AM.
They find her Dr. husband asleep on the pourch. They beat and restrain him and put him in the basement. Dr.'s wife and two daughters are woken
up. The cons decide that they're not happy with thier take. So one convict takes the Dr.'s wife to the bank to withdraw $15,000.00. She
manages to get the message out that her family is being held. Police
are alerted and set up roadblock some blocks away from the house.
Meanwhile the convicts rape the Dr.'s wife and 15 and 19 year-old
daughters. They have them pose in photographs. The Dr. manages to loosen
his bonds and escape the basement. He rolls on the ground to a neighbors
house. Not soon enough. The convicts kill his wife and douse the daughters in thier rooms with gasoline. They set the girls and the house
on fire. They are apprehended when they run into the police roadblock.
During the trial, they point fingers at each other. "He made me do it!"
No, he made me do it!" The pitcures of the victims are horrendous. The
jurors needed post tramatic stress conselling.
2) We've heard of the Hillside Stranglers and Charles Manson's "Family"
But few have heard about the two paroled convicts that got the idea that
they would kidnap and kill one girl from all the teenage years. "Let's
kill a 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, year old girl. They got a specially
made van outfitted so they could torture and film the girl's reactions.
They would pinch the girl's nipples with plyers. One girl asked that she
be allowed to pray before she was killed. "Don't worry, we're not going
to kill you." They killed her.
3)And last, but not least are the "Zebra Killings." In the early 1970's
a Black Muslim group was systematically killing white folks. You had to
kill a certain number of men, women and children to raise in status.
It was thought to be easier to kill men then women and children so you
had to kill and dismember 20 white guys to get the same rewards you'd get
if you killed 10 white women or 5 white children. The religious leaders
said, "Don't rape and rob them. Just cleanse the earth of them." Well,
plenty were raped and robbed. Photograhs were also taken of murders in
progress and dismembered corposes. The bulk of the killings occurred in
the San Fransisco area, but during the trial it was testafied that the group was nationwide.
Oh, I guess just a solo killer working alone is OK because they only kill one person at a time. HEAVY sarcasm.

But sometimes when two "kindred spirits" get together, they spur each other on to new depths of depravity and sadism, as well as giving them the courage/motivation to kill, or at least kill more. They do together what neither of them would have been able or willing to do alone.
It is far more complicated than that, but essentially this has been seen many times in history with Norris and Bittaker, Ng and Lake, Brady and Hindley, Lucas and Toole, the Dnepropetrovsk maniacs, the list goes on and on.
Of course it doesn't make it any easier for the family of the victims. Their world would have been as deeply affected either way.
