I'm saying it's dishonest to equate their struggle to be understood with that of a psychopath who is normally the one trying to muddy the waters so that he/she will have an advantage. If there is a constant drain of energy, the psychopath is the one doing the draining. The psychopath can't have it both ways, either he keeps hiding or comes clean and relinquishes the advantages hiding affords.
DeleteThe author of this blog never said she actually agrees with the quote, maybe she just thought it was something to ponder and mull over. She did, however, recently say she is a humanist. Sociopaths have problems in their interpersonal relationships, but can often have concerns for issues on a larger scale such social or environmental issues. The same thing is seen in borderline personality disorder.

DeleteIt may not have been the desire for professional advancement, it could be any number of things - building social capital, promoting a 'nice guy' persona, gaining access to certain groups, business opportunities etc. These are the questions that would run through my mind when faced with a psychopath proclaiming an interest in social issues: what's in it for them?
DeleteI had a look at the James Fallon clip. He's been happy enough to toil as a low-profile scientist for years until this chance discovery; he's been married to his wife for 50 years - how psychopathic can he be? So he has the brain deficiency but he's obviously been well socialised and loved as a child by his Italian mamma (who should stop feeding him pasta pronto). If psychopathy is a spectrum disorder, he's at the low end of it.
DeleteAgain, good questions as he may have been trying to manipulate other's perceptions for any number of reasons, however he was pretty introspective and honest about damaging or harmful things that he had done. He also came from a good home, but my experiences with sociopaths is almost all of them took some kind of interest in social/political issues, and have often been pretty philosophical. I don't know that their interests are entirely emotion/empathy based, but I don't see why they can't have an intellectual/cognitive interest in such things. Sociopathy is much more complex than a lot of psychologists seem to recognize, and psychology has only focused on understanding the individuals that engage in criminal activity or cause physical harm which has effected a lot of people's (even professionals) understanding of sociopathy. Personally I like examining all of the complexities, the good and the bad.
DeleteI agree, it's a complex subject. The psychopath I know best was interested in social/political issues, but mainly in terms of how they might affect his investment opportunities. His biggest interest in life was amassing capital. He was also philosophical because he suffered a lot - depression, anxiety, boredom - unlike many of the psychopaths on this site who seem relatively content. He had an emptiness at his core that he struggled to understand. He could distract himself to an extent but ultimately he had to face himself. He tried to be a good father to his kids, especially when he had an audience. As you said, complex.
DeleteThe narcissist I know best is equally complex. Adheres strictly to a religious practice to keep her on the straight and narrow, doesn't lie but ultimately is a parasite. No one is perfect and my exposure to people with PDs has taught me to appreciate what is good but keep my distance until I know who I can trust.

Yeah I liked porn more as a kid than I do now. I was very much into real life snuff films and other weird things. ReplyDeleteAs a freshly diagnosed sociopath and narcissist, I can say with certainly that some sociopaths do care about topics that are bigger than us; if and only if there is some type of incentive in doing so. As in my case, I am in my sophomore year of college and I am studying school administration and how to effectively teach and stimulate a classroom. I am doing this so I can later (hopefully) lead my own school district in Chicago to help raise grades and decrease dropout rates among inner-city children. Of course, it should have to go without saying that I do not give a flying fuck about these kids, but they inevitably effect my life and the economy so I might as well use my shallow charm and wit to help the poor bastards gain some knowledge. (Plus it tickles me pick to have all the power over so many peoples lives.)

After 19 years of lying, showing nothing but shallow emotionless love, manipulating, and charming my way out of everything, my dearest of mother told me should take some personality quizzes for shits and giggles and eventually I stumbled on some socio/narc quizzes and the pieces just all made sense and I soon became enthralled in learning about sociopaths. I decided to go to a shrink and she was quite shocked that I came in on my own will. (I went because I want to be sure I was what I thought I was.) Now I am going to eventually work on getting my degrees so I can eventually rule the world while eating someones liver with some fava beans and nice chiante. ;)

My family were the ones to push the whole sociopathy issue at me too, but I am far too paranoid to go near a shrink. Not to mention the label doesn't mean anything to me. I am just my darling, lovely self.
