I just got around to listening to this This American Life episode on psychopaths:
It's largely more of the same from the NPR articles, but in audio format. More from Jon Ronson about sociopathic CEOs, sociopathic stares, small amygdalas make you "dangerous," and the role that the "predatory spirit" plays in success.
The most entertaining section is the part about Jon Ronson meeting a sociopathic seeming CEO who fired an employee who happened to be bragging about his car thusly: "You may have a fancy sportscar, but I'll tell you what you don't have -- a job." Gasp! Psychopaths can be so straightforward and tactless!!!!!
Spoiler alert, host Ira Glass practically outs himself as a sociopath, but not really, according to the psychologist, because he wasn't malicious enough (is that the hidden PCL-R trait, that only psychologists are privy to?)

I think socio/psychopaths are disconnected from actual people while may be connected to certain concepts. In the least they simply are not in need of being connected or somehow lost all hope of connection, but that does not mean they don't want to be connected (think keeping body parts, or little items of the murder connections they made).
ReplyDeleteThere are types of people socios/psychos want to be connected to naturally, without really needing anything specific from them (could be a family member or a friend). Beyond that though they only seek connection for their basic and/or complicated needs. In other words a socio/psycho needs to be constantly choosing, hoping, thinking, scheming, questioning where s/he is in the big picture. It is hardly about the particular person in the picture but more about what that person can be a tool for.People are totally expendable for a socio/psycho, even the ones they feel connected. In all honesty, given that death is a sure reality anyone who can come to a total understanding of it can act either like a socio or a saint (or a saint exterior socio? like Erin?)
i don't think there's a difference between psychopathy and sociopathy, it's the same condition with different levels of severity. some psycho's are more out of control then others, some are less intelligent then others, some are more violent then others. i think wether they are too 'far gone' or not depends on all of these things, as well as their particular motivations.

It all depends on how sociopaths go about getting what they want. I can attack a person as easily as I can shake their hand. Whatever I decide to do at the time will probably shape how you view me. It's not about what motivates sociopaths, it's about how they go about achieving they're goals which shapes people's view of them. Intellegence does factor into what tactics you choose but It's really all about whatever works best at the time. If you're completely uninhibited you can do whatever you like.

We all get so much attention when we are born (mostly good but also possibly bad). In a way we are all chosen one's. Then as we get older the attention dies out. We all stay on the course of attention. High functioning ones may be able to jump ship, meaning get away from the abusive attention, or stop crying for attention and learn to get attention with no need to cry. And that style, nature, intensity of early attention scars us for the rest of our lives. In our weak moments don' we all just want to rest in that imaginary perfect mommy's care? I wish there were some mommy houses where you just went to be cuddled with affection and allowed to cry in a sizable sweet mama's arms.

I agree that Serial Killers are probably the main reason that psychopathy has gained so much attention. Have you read some of the texts that claims we make up 4% - or even 10% - of the population?
That's another symptom of the stigma that has arisen from the eagerness to find someone to blame for all evils. We're today what Demons and the Devil was while people still widely were religious and use religious mythologies to explain the nature of the world.
When I listen to this audo I keep finding myself thinking: "Wow, it really doesn't take much to be seen as a psychopath!"
And then I think, again: No wonder I was diagnosed! How could I possibly have avoided it when all you need is to be human, more or less.

I've always seen things opposite to how you describe them (always, until fairly recently). I thought the living dead were normal people, and we (psychopaths and other Cluster B type personalities) are the ones who are alive. We act, we change, we create, we are lively, we take risks rather than sit idle at home in "peace" and (deadly) quiet.
I'm not saying this to make offensive, it's really how it looks to a psychopathic individual!
However, I've learned - since I began my writing project (Psychopathic Writings, a website like this one), that you normal folks are just as alive as we are, it just looks different because you are different (from us).
Why is it that it is us, the psychopaths, who have to be open minded and realize we're not the only 'real' people, when our nature is to scorn weakness, whereas you, the righteous ones who have the power to decide what is good and right, you can't do the same?
