Your boss, the sociopath

Bob Hare and others recently released an estimate that as many as 1 in 25 bosses are psychopaths:
They disguise it by using their status, charm and manipulation.

It is only positive experiences such as having a happy childhood that stop them from turning into potential serial killers, according to the scientists.

The ruthless corporate culture helps psychopaths by rewarding callousness and the disregard of people’s feelings.

What’s even worse is that these vicious bosses are rubbish at their jobs. They keep climbing the ladder because they cover up their failings by charming people.

The pioneering study was led by New York psychologist Dr Paul Babiak who said: “Psychopaths really aren’t the kind of person you think they are.

“You could be married to one for 20 years and not know it.” His team studied business chiefs to find out how many psychos work for major companies.

Fellow researcher Professor Bob Hare said: “A psychopath can tell what you’re thinking but what they don’t do is feel what you feel. These are people without a conscience.”

The findings . . . showed that bosses are four times more likely to be psychopaths than the general population. Scientists believe 1% of the public are psychos.
The tone of the article is completely sensationalist. It's also typical of any positive information about sociopaths to try to put as negative a spin on it as possible. Instead of congratulations sociopaths for being apparently 4 times more likely to succeed than normal people (am I doing the math right?), they are instead bad at their jobs and succeed by disregarding people's feelings? In what way does disregarding people's feelings lead to success, necessarily? I mean, it's so obviously a ploy, so obviously thinly veiled propaganda -- the type that allows dictators to ascend to power and oppress people all in the name of courting power over the idiot masses.

The quotes from Babiak and Hare are pretty reasonable, though.

  1. Rubbish bosses because they are psychopaths? No. But I'm sure there are some rubbish psychopathic bosses.

Depends on the business setting, frankly. The chief mall cop who thinks he's Steve McQueen and Dirty Harry rolled into one isn't likely to be a real winner.

In a corporate setting that is in itself psychopathic, who the fuck do you think will climb to the top? Seriously. Everything is business and politics, and if you have a good handle on both, you will succeed in anything life throws your way.

  9. Anon, how do you do that? How can you be obsessed about people? Who are these? Family? Celebrities? Your sense of connection with them? Is that real? Physical? Imaginary? I mean do you get to hug them, or just think about them?

Your statement reminded me of my cousin, let's call her Jennie. Cousin Jenny, sounds like Cousin Benny, lol. Anyway, Cousin Jenny nonstop talks about rich people and celebrities. I get to listen to her obsessive thoughts. She presents these as if she is just sharing some facts but between the lines I do see a whole bunch of self-loathing for not being rich or pretty like these people. It is very tiresome to listen to her, I can only imagine how tiring it must be in her own head.

The more you let your mental conversations continue the more they happen. As soon as you start swicth your thoughts to a place you enjoy somewhere peaceful, it's hard but if you purposly make yourself over and over it becomes easier.

Tell yourself firmly to stop then push the good thought in.

  14. I'd agree with Tik in that cousin Jenny has minimal amount of real friends. It's her husband, son, mom, dad. She calls her mom about four times a day, hardly goes anywhere, hardly has any social interaction. She does not even join her husband in the evening events he has to attend for networking purposes. So, the idea of vacuum certainly fits her reasons for obsession. But, she complains that she does not have any rich or celebrity friends, meaning anyone who could easily become a new friend does not fit her idea of how her friends should be like. No shit like narcissism.

  20. Living in our minds and going over what we wanted and how it felt when we thought we had it, keeps us from living real lives. Thats being frozen.

So if you don't physically change your surroundings and people your stuck.

  21. On topic...

Sociopathic traits need to be developed to be able to stay as strong leaders. If one is overly sensitive to criticism, for example, one could never stay in a position of leadership. So, that right there eliminates the uber empath, HSP, BPD, etc. The narcissists are at an advantage to become leaders but could not sustain in the long term as well unless they also sharpen their sociopathic skills.

Narcissist leaders commit suicide when they fail in business; had they developed socio traits they would never kill themselves.

Sounds like ton of praise for sociopathy, but I think a combo of these along with caring and believing in developing new leaders and healthy employees would work the best.

  23. Tik, that helps, thank you. Now I understand what the word means, I guess to me the word was paralyzed. Hmmm... I travel a lot, so hard to say I am physically frozen, but I have to admit a part of me that is expected to perform in a same-as-before fashion is shut down. I am bored of doing that, and people still want me to just because I was good at it. Maybe it is dormant. Maybe I'll miss doing that again one day. Maybe I'm protesting something.

If that is the definition, how yours manifests itself, Erin? Are you referring to not talking to your parents when you say you are frozen?

  26. I think I am BPD because the intensity of my emotional response in close relationships with people is too much to handle for them. They can read into me from miles away.

As a consequence, I have avoided any opportunity for intimacy and hardly had any sexual contact for years but I am not unattractive or socially inept. Recently after doing a whole bunch of reading, I tried some techniques for normalizing typical BPD tendencies in social situations. That drew some unexpected results from a very attractive and sexual girl, more than half my age who was traveling through. We had unfinished sex due to a miscalculation in her flight arrangement. I had to rush her to the airport with barely enough time for us to dress. From that point all my control skills and mental crutches deteriorated until she came back through en route back to her country. By then I was such an emotional mess from all the projections and unfulfilled desires that it was impossible for her to feel that she had the space or choice to exercise her earlier impulsiveness. Instead of being the casual accidental object of lust, I was now the predictable horny puppy just brimming with anticipation. So despite all my attempts and her openness within the 3 days left for us, I was too much of a confused wreck to present much of anything resembling seduction material in the normal sense.

    ReplyDelete
  27. :) Horny puppy, sorry. Now I understand better. That sounds like what you said, a horny puppy not the obsessed type I was thinking of. What can I say, it's tough to be a man with all the testosterone running in your body. Not sure what you said qualifies you as BPD though. You could use a Mrs Robinson to get rid of the tension so you can target someone closer to your age for a more balanced relationship, the total package as Medusa (was it?) once said.

"I am a Born Again Christian.Born Again means just that. There are no more classifications such as Socio, BPD, etc.
One has become new. To the people to whom this has happened, they know."

Well the conversion happened through a ritual. That ritual is a way to make you think that you are a 'new person'. Almost all people that went through such a conversion - the type of religion doesn't matter - say that they feel it.
It's all about suggestion, you make yourself believe something has changed. Can that be positive for a person? Ofcourse. Sometimes christians are baptised again when they did 'bad' things (addiction, crime ...) and some will truely believe that they feel they got a blessing, starting a whole new life (and often getting obsessed about 'christ', ... which can make them really annoying).

It would be much more interesting to reinvent oneself, but most people lack the personal qualities to do so.

    ReplyDelete
  48. As a BPD, I am severely conflicted about orgasms or any sensations that could become an addiction or obsession and yield too much control or power to the supplier over the supplicant. As a BPD I would become the perpetual pawn or criminal. The only addictions that I partake in and have no conflict about, are those without human suppliers. I yearn to trust but have no management capacity to consistently do so. My trust is a switch with no regulator.

  53. As I said most people lack the qualities and strength to change oneself, change habits through rational thinking and decisions.

For those people who want to change their habits/life ..., conversion, religion in general ... can be a very effective method. Indoctrinate them with something else to change their behaviour.

This can be effective on many criminals, but for a true sociopath it obviously won't work because they would find it bullshit (and they're right) and don't want to change their 'bad' habits as they enjoy their lifestyle. I'm speaking from experience.

  55. Erin if you read and understood what I wrote earlier, you would have picked up that I can try and succeed sufficient fakeness to open people up. But escalating it into the art of seduction (a socially accepted form of trickery)is difficult and awkward as I find it extremely hard to hide my emotions which is slaved to my primal desires. If not gratified, the emotions have an annoying habit to over compensate by rationalizing the failure to fake.

Truth is everyone is judging one another by their own experience.

Zero empathy, no conscience, super ego, aggressive, manipulative, devious, views people as objects etc etc, these are the traits of sociopathy, and they are NOT the makings of a good person. if you don't posses these traits, you are not a sociopath, therefore, sociopaths are not good people.

i'm not suggesting that all sociopaths are screwed up losers, incapable of achieving anything. what i am saying, is that there are no nice, kind, good natured sociopaths out there, none. period. if you don't agree with me, then you are deluded.

i've heard many sociopaths in this very forum say the same as me.

    ReplyDelete
  64. anon, that is true, it would be hard to call sociopaths 'good' people, but surely a sociopath could still provide for its 'assets' as in wife, children, parents, etc. There are contract killers who were the pillars in their society, so basically try to be on the good side of a sociopath and let him/her work for you and manage the relationship. I think it is doable.

    ReplyDelete
  65. @Sceli

Sure, but in the end those contract killers, such as richard kuklinski, just use their families to mask their activities. Looking good on the surface is different to actually being good. Providing for your family doesn't excuse every other bad deed.

"so basically try to be on the good side of a sociopath and let him/her work for you and manage the relationship. I think it is doable."

Yes, then they may treat you well for as long as you remain useful, but i don't believe that you should have to constantly DO for, and submit to another persons demands to stay on their good side. it just goes to show how self centred they are.

    ReplyDelete
  66. You are big time vulnerable when it comes to young sweet things

Sceli, I supposed by that you mean the pliability of youth that works both ways? Yes, isn't grasping exactly that, makes it so much more the obsession? The temptation of deluding yourself that a young mind could be molded to be unconditionally yours? The young mind that is the only one pliable enough to relate intensely for a short while to your bare soul. And when that ends abruptly, you take it as an invitation to correct an unacceptable weakness of youth or worst still, as a signal to take drastic measures to secure a possession. I don't want to go down that path.

  67. I have learned a lot of things about Bob Hare in the past couple of months which suggests that he has been tainted by the results that his own work has caused.

Jon Ronson (author of 'Men Who Stare at Goats' and 'The Psychopath Test') is one of the writers who help get some of the negative consequences of all the hype Hare has received out to the public.

I can recommend both books to the readers who count yourselves among the normal - or at least non-sociopathic/-psychopathic - part of the population. They are both fun and informative.

You are welcome to pay a visit at my website as well. I try to complement Sociopath World with a slightly different angle which focuses more specifically on the psychopath minority.

How many normal people do you really believe are as good as they look at the surface? This is a global phenomenon.

Not, but killing outside of the family doesn't make providing for your family a bad deed.

  69. Dear sw (beepers, preferably, but not necessary)
My bpd causes me to shut down when a nice person wants me to open up. The most recent person is very, very nice. i want to keep him. I'm torn between letting him see me vulnerable because he is attracted to my strengths.. I feel him wanting more. I feel him wanting to see ME. I have issues about this. Well, for one thing, he speaks of his father as someone who has "always had girlfriends". I know we all aren't like our parents, that is, I know that intelluctualy. If I go through another loss I have a fear I will break again, be even MORE closed, and become MORE jaded than I am already. I know it's a weakness. Whenever I've let my vulnerable side out in the past, I've ended up losing. I feel too vulnerable, especially when I connect sexually. My new potential mate and I have amazing sex. I can't even bring myself to call him mate, see? I say "potential" mate. I am pulling back compulsively. I think about my game -stupid, I know.

How can I work through this without leading him on? Contradiction, right? In the past when I've done this I realize my intentions were distorted, ie I change my mind .

What the hell is the matter with me? This new person likes me for who I am (so far) See, when I use statements like "so far" I shoot myself in the foot. I'm hiding my ass off, meanwhile I really like this person a lot. Who has been in this situation? I don't feel like a sociopath. I feel bpd or narcissist. When i say "the game" I mean keeping him. I'm compulsive about it. I'm trying to be myself, but I don't ever know which self to project..I am a bit idealizing what the future will bring. Every time I think what a wonderful person he is, I start to put him on a pedestal. This feels terrible. When I'm with him i feel great, but the next day I feel dread; I feel everything built by getting closer as something of a mirage. Haven's blog helps a bunch, but some of you who don't participate there have good insight. Anyone?

By the way, I know lots of women who do this number on themselves, not just bpd. I know men who do it too.

  85. I am not saying kuklinski was good. All I'm saying is say you are kuklinski's wife and you have slight suspicion that the guy is a sociopath. He assumes you have no idea, he is able to turn his rage into money for you, the chances are he is enjoying the role of a providing man for his family, and even doing his best in bed and making you quite happy sexually.

In that situation you could choose to ignore the possibility of his being a sociopath and simply indulge yourself in what the guy is willing to provide for the family, and pray on the side that your suspicion is not true (and keep praying that if it is true he never gets caught).

That is a utilitarian view of dealing with a potential sociopath. All I am saying is by keeping a proper distance one can be very happy around a sociopath. Just play the game, and indulge. Don't beep.

  93. I saw an opinion where someone says JR was basically a very insecure guy who only wanted to make his dad proud and that he was not a sociopath. Who knows. I'd need to watch it again with what I know today about sociopathy.

For me, the short blonde (with almost no neck) was the most interesting character psychologically and physically. She was a weird combo of pretty and ugly, I never knew what to call her. Was she a nymphomaniac?

Seriously, Misanthrope, the majority mainstream normal society cares, or we wouldn't have them create all this heated attention on us.

"If people can't see your shortcoming and they don't hold you back, then they're not even worth criticising."

    Indeed.

One could say the same for people who can't see your strengths.

Neither hold us back, and they're the ones doing the criticizing, this preoccupation of theirs makes them incapable of looking to what really matters about us.
I'll say that in this sense we're pretty safe... as always.

ALthough I am quite ready to label any guy who seems like a physical threat to me, or who gets caught with some pathetic unimportant lie. Not just a guy, but also a girl. Recently a gf lied about something so stupid and unimportant that I decided that is a pathological lie with no good reason and that I should keep a healthy distance from the woman. Can never be sure, and would rather err on the safe side.

What i do have is the ability to basically read minds (thats just more logically deducing patterns based on situation circumstance and past experience) i do not "feel" the way others would even though i do have feelings from time to time! My Boss is currently a Psychopath by all definitions i have ever seen and he is besting me! what is the best way to deal with this situation how does a sociopath go head to head with a psychopath??

  106. Sherlock Holmes in the BBC's drama Sherlock is portrayed as a self-proclaimed "high functioning sociopath" who takes delight in murders and other crimes, although he channels that energy into solving such crimes rather than committing. His nemesis, Jim Moriarty, is a psychopath, displaying extreme intelligence and narcissism and having no qualms about endangering or killing innocent people in order to confound Holmes.

The ^ ^ are meant as eyes indicating smile.

The , is a wry smile.

    '^L^,

"ALthough I am quite ready to label any guy who seems like a physical threat to me, or who gets caught with some pathetic unimportant lie. Not just a guy, but also a girl."

That is a mistake for a number of reasons.

For one, you do not have the expertise nor the education to label people. That should make you cautious about doing it, especially based on something as common as a lie.

I would advice you to just make a note to be more inquisitive and not immediately take everything they say for truth.

Everybody lie. I've never met a person who has never lied.

It is how often they lie and about what that is important. If they lie in order to do harm, whether or not for monetary gain or sheer pleasure, then you need no label. All you need is to never believe their word again, and - depending on the seriousness of their lying - to stop associating with them.

It would be impossible to label or exclude every person who lies, because everybody do lie. It's in the human nature to lie under varying circumstances and for various reasons.

Personally I always look at the whole. Does the person do more good and tell more and more important truths than they lie, then I won't exclude them. If I did I'd end up rather lonely very fast, and I would loose some of the most interesting and giving people that I know of.

So your advice is to back down? never in my life have i ever backed down granted ive always been dealing with ppl i deem to be inferior to me and are easily beaten by me but i get bored and move on! ive been in this situation for 7 months now and its fascinated me up until this point but i have had no feedback or even pointers. ive come to the conclusion that i must leave my position which almost leaves me with a sick sensation in my stomach and i do not think this person is better than me i just haven't found a weakness in his Armour its almost like no matter what is said there is no breaking him! he is a walking contradiction and will argue against any point made even if it conflicts with his last point, yet the energy i perceive from him is that no matter what he is always right and i am a moron! is there really no other option for me?

  111. sociopaths are like the male version of a borderline, a psychopath is a human predator. the dumb guy that spends most of his life in prison is probably a sociopath, a psychopath breaks the law for fun and usually gets away with it.

    ReplyDelete
  112. a sociopath will use people outside their group but will be restricted when it comes to friends and family, this is because they lack the grandiosity of a true psychopath.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Sceli, first major indicator would be if the guy is holding down a job and has their own place, not that that makes them definitly not socio.

I don't think it's possible to tell without sometime or interaction but being aware of them and picking up on inconsistacies would send up red flags.

If their whole intent is to distroy in the end then we need to give every encounter with new people a watch and see before getting involved.

  116. Zhawq: so your a Psychopath!? i did read a bit of your page and will continue to do so, but i have a few questions seeing as how ive only ever met one Psycho and if you are number two i would like to stay on your good side!

is it possible to reason with you? what are a few key triggers you may have that might open your eyes? from what ive seen so far it has nothing to do with words or actions merely timing! the only way to get through is if there is a moment of mental weakness which is fleeting and far between in occurances.

Also how do you deal with the loneliness of perceiveing yourself far superior to sociopaths and empaths.

And what makes you happy? what would put a REAL smile on your face not a mimicked one.

Lastly i was told the only thing more dangerous that a Psychopath is a self aware Psychopath. You have a Great website with what i believe to be the intentions of helping others, what was the turning point for you?

This information would help me greatly and i know that everyone is different but if i could just get a small glimpse into your mind i would be grateful!

But the research just showed that most of them can't really bother to be rich by being competent. They just charm their way up.

When I was about 4 years old, I was made to choose between saying I was sorry and being hit with a pipe.
I chose the pipe, but not by saying, "I choose the pipe." I just couldn't bring that wretched word to my lips to save my life.

You also don't want to give me credit for calling you out, instead you are attempting to turn me against Misanthrope? How pathetic. It doesn't matter who gets the credit for showing you as a phony, as long as you are embarrassed. You are the one who should take the credit, because if you never denied raping someone when I called you a rapist then we would have never been able to prove it. You are a sad excuse for a human being. Only someone truely pathetic would pretend to be a rapist.
You people that believed him are bigger suckers. That's why you keep ending up with loser boyfriends who sit on your couch smoking pot and eating cheese puffs while playing World Of Warcraft, and come on here weeping about how he's a sociopath. When I first read you and these other cunts anguishing stories I can't stop laughing. After a while though, I'm sure I speak for everyone, it is so fucking boring.

    ReplyDelete
  138. The thing is that it's not even the fact that Zhawq lied. I'm sure everyone here has lied at some point. It's the fact that his whole story has holes in it. We now know that he's lied about rape. If he lies about rape, why not about murder and being a psychopath? He forgets parts of his story when you take him by surprise. Not just the rapes. And that's the pathetic thing. If he comes on here just to play psychopath it's laughable.

"why does zhawq never even bother to change his writing style when he makes up characters?"

I noticed that. KrayZ? Lol. And I still remember "Toxy" the female psychopath. Apparently we were going to be seeing alot more of her until somebody called zhawq out on it.
