My dad is a psychopath: M.E. Thomas interviews Kid X

Confessions of a Sociopath: A Life Spent Hiding in Plain Sight author M.E. Thomas interviews Kid X, whose father is diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder (ASPD). They talk about boredom, passion, race (Kid X is black), being different, desires for change and the possibility of change, blending/masking to fit in, emotions, and creative outlets in which we can hear our own "voice."

  1. Interesting to hear an eye witnesses account of what it is like to live with a sociopath. Liked his take on race to raised some questions on how such social factors affect development of sociopathic traits.

  2. Its interesting when this guy says he feels the emotion for a "super short time". I've found this to be a repeating trait among similar minds, an emotion only lasts until the next thought. A neurotypical emotion which will linger for a day or longer, it will permeate thier own mood and behavior.

  3. For myself, I limited that interplay growing up so I didn't know my social self. Instead, I relied on my very own capabilities to the maximum amount possible.

With sociopaths, I've wondered, when done of them have called themselves a monster, for instance, whether they'd been called a monster and decided "I'll show you a monster" - or perhaps if they'd learned to interpret themselves that way. As you recognize, I've always thought the underlying behaviors are more nuanced than that: self-protection, pre-emptive strikes, etc.

As I raise my kids - and I guess most parents do that - I reproduce to them what I see as their traits and strengths. As I notice those things, I encourage them. I believe this provides them a basis for self-awareness and self-confidence. But I do know this is often a vigorous and essential process. If I didn't pair, I feel their internal realities would be a touch amorphous. Of course, their peer groups play an enormous role during this too.
